Dear Friend,
Earlier today, I announced that I will not seek re-election for Congress next year.
For nearly four decades, I’ve had the distinct pleasure of serving San Francisco in the United States Congress. Together, we’ve generated a stunning legacy of resilience, hard work, and progress.
The magic of this beautiful city and the rich spirit of San Franciscans could not be more apparent. The vibrancy, diversity and creative innovation that buzzes through the hard-working families, heroic veterans and inspiring students of our city have allowed us to weather our fair share of challenges and be a beacon of hope for our nation — and the world.
When the Loma Prieta earthquake struck, we brought in federal support to not only recover but reimagine the South of Market neighborhood.
And when the HIV/AIDS epidemic tested our city to its core, under the leadership of University of San Francisco and San Francisco General Hospital, we pioneered the comprehensive community-based care, prevention and research that served as the framework for the Ryan White Care Act, which continues to ensure access to lifesaving medical care nationwide today.
As I reflect on my years of service, the slogan of my first campaign, “A Voice That Will Be Heard,” could not be more apt. With the faith and trust that you’ve placed in me, my colleagues elected me to shatter the marble ceiling of the House to become the first woman Speaker of the House whose voice most certainly would be heard.
That moment in history empowered me to bring home billions of dollars for our city and our state, which have resulted in enormous, paradigm-shifting wins for our progress on health care, housing, climate change and strengthened our iconic Golden Gate Bridge while creating good-paying, union jobs for San Franciscans.
While there is still much work to do, I could not be more proud of what we’ve accomplished together.
Regardless of the title bestowed upon me — Speaker, Leader, Whip — there has been no greater honor for me than to stand on the Floor of the House and speak for the people of San Francisco.
With a grateful heart, I look forward to my final year of service as the Representative from San Francisco, and leave you with this message:
San Francisco, know your power. We have made history and progress — and have always led the way. And now, we must continue to do so by remaining full participants in our Democracy and fighting for the ideals that we hold dear.
In doing so, we will ensure that our city shines on as a beacon of hope, justice and peace for our country and generations to come.
Thank you, San Francisco. Thank you, VIPs — our amazing Volunteers in Politics across America. May God bless you and may God bless America.
