====================================================

For 75 years, World Animal Protection has been rewriting history for animals.

The lifesaving work that began in the 1950s by two determined organizations has grown into a global movement—one at the forefront of the fight to end animal suffering and transform the future for animals. None of this would have been possible without the compassion and continued commitment of people like you.

====================================================

1950s: World Federation of the Protection of Animals (WFPA) and International Society for the Protection of Animals (ISPA) were founded.

1964: ISPA rescued 10,000 animals from floodwaters in Suriname, marking the first of hundreds of lifesaving disaster relief missions.

1983: Opened our first animal shelter and clinic in Costa Rica, marking the start of a long legacy of wildlife rescues and rehabilitation programs, particularly in South America

1992: Launched one of our longest running and most successful campaigns: Libearty, which focused on the exploitation and suffering of bears and led to the banning of bear dancing in Greece, Turkey, and India. We opened the world’s first bear sanctuary in response.

2005: After years of advocacy work, Vietnam agreed to ban bear bile farming.

2021: South Africa officially committed to phasing out captive lion breeding and petting experiences.

2023: Rescued Mundi the elephant from the Puerto Rico zoo where she was kept in isolation for nearly 35 years.

2025: Provided emergency relief to partner organizations working to rescue and rehabilitate wildlife and companion animals that were affected by the Los Angeles Wildfires.

====================================================

This is only a snapshot of our progress and successes. Each milestone is a testament to what is possible when people like you refuse to accept cruelty as the norm. Together, we’ve changed the lives of countless animals and shaped a better future for them.

The next chapter is waiting to be written. Will you help us continue to make the world a better place for animals?

With gratitude,
World Animal Protection US
