Team, Political strategists often talk about “80-20” issues — the topics that the overwhelming majority of Americans agree upon, and that politicians can win on. Count gerrymandering as one of them. A new poll found that 82% of Americans agree that redistricting should be done by independent commissions — not by the party in power. Even a large majority — 71% — of Republican voters in GOP-controlled states agree that independent, non-partisan commissions should control district lines. Despite the clear will of the people, the GOP and Trump are recklessly redistricting wherever they can to keep their grip on power. We’re fiercely fighting back to ensure that this scheme backfires — and make clear that an extremist minority can’t take control of our democracy.
In state after state, we’re seeing Republican politicians put Donald Trump’s demands over the needs of their own constituents. But in state after state, Americans are rising up and telling gerrymandering politicians to let their voices be heard. Just this week, a group of voters rallied against the Indiana governor’s attempt to redraw maps mid-decade — reflecting the majority of Indiana voters who reject this redistricting and stand for fairness. Meanwhile, thousands of voters in Missouri protested Republican Governor Mike Kehoe’s special session to gerrymander Missouri’s maps, carrying signs that said “no rigged maps” and “let every vote count.” Citizens there are currently gathering signatures for a ballot initiative to ensure the voters have a chance to reject their blatant power grab. This redistricting crisis has quickly gotten out of hand, thanks to a president who has no intention of being accountable to the people. We can defeat their efforts to undermine democracy, but we need to have the resources to fight multiple fires at once — make a donation today and let’s show that a loud and vocal majority of Americans oppose this GOP map rigging. —Brianna Brianna Shamsuddoha
