SF YIMBY is proud to announce our first endorsement for 2026 and it's none other than our biggest YIMBY champion, Scott Wiener!
One of the first endorsements we made as a fledgling movement 9 years ago was Scott Wiener for State Senate. And what a win it has been for the pro-housing movement across our country. Scott has been a stalwart, passing piece after piece of high impact legislation that has truly reshaped the housing landscape in California and has set us in a more positive direction to tackle our housing shortage.
One of his first bills, SB 35, has produced thousands of affordable homes. The legislation has been so effective that even those initially opposed have ended up using it. He later permanently extended and strengthened that bill with SB 423. Another early bill, SB 828, is the only reason San Francisco is currently rezoning large swaths of the City that were downzoned almost 5 decades ago.
When it comes to legalizing homes near transit, he did not take no for an answer. After many years of broad-based coalition building and organizing, this year we had a major breakthrough with SB 79, recently signed into law. Along the way, he's passed numerous other pieces of legislation that have set California on a better path. Beyond his own legislative work, he has inspired lawmakers at all levels in California and throughout the country to be more pro-housing. It was not popular to say yes to housing when Scott went to Sacramento in 2016. Now we have candidates all over the country singing the praises of more homes.
As YIMBY goes national, we cannot think of a better champion to grow the movement and represent us in Washington.
Stay tuned for what's next as we will have plenty of opportunities for you to get involved and learn more about what he will do in Congress. In the meantime, you can sign up to stay up to date on the latest for his campaign and learn how you can support his run right now
