Transgender and Gender-nonconforming (TGNC) people are a foundational part of the LGBTQ+ community and broader society. The Stonewall Riots and the gay liberation movement that followed were led by brave, revolutionary transgender and gender-nonconforming people. Our transgender siblings are instrumental in our fight for equity, belonging, and justice and must be protected and supported.
At The Center, 25% of our staff and 40% of our clients identify as transgender. Starting with The Center’s Gender Identity Project, created in 1989, our services have evolved over time to include a range of transgender-driven support, advocacy, education, and economic stability initiatives. The Center provides a safe, affirming space for TGNC people to receive the resources and connection they need.
During the month of November, we renew our commitment to celebrating the contributions TGNC people have made to our movement by centering their stories, fostering healing and joy, and fighting for an inclusive, affirming, and equitable existence.
