President's Message

In moments like this, I am reminded of the strength and compassion within our school nursing community. As the federal government shutdown continues, millions of children and families face uncertainty about SNAP benefits and navigating emergency food supports — and school nurses remain a steady source of care and connection.

Across the country, food banks and community partners—including Feeding America, a nationwide network of food banks, food pantries, and meal programs—are stepping up to meet rising needs. And in our schools, you are often the first to notice when a child is struggling. School nurses play an irreplaceable role in identifying food insecurity and helping families connect with vital resources.

Every student deserves to feel safe, nourished, and ready to learn. Thank you for the care and advocacy you bring to your schools every day. Together, we will continue to lift up our students and ensure that no child goes without the nutrition they need to grow, learn, and thrive.

NASN News and Highlights

American Diabetes Month: School Nurse Resources

November is American Diabetes Month®, and NASN provides resources to raise awareness, educate families about type 1 diabetes (T1D), and promote high-quality care. T1D is a lifelong autoimmune disease and unpreventable, but early detection can reduce the risk of life-threatening complications and hospitalization. NASN's T1D Awareness Toolkit provides evidence-based recommendations to increase awareness of T1D screening options and motivate families to discuss screening with healthcare providers.

Climate-Driven Health Challenges in Schools: Get the Training You Need

In recent years, wildfires, extreme heat events, and other environmental disasters have increasingly affected school environments, introducing smoke, dust, and pollutants that can compromise indoor air quality. NASN's new NCPD course, Understanding the Impact of Wildfires and Extreme Heat on School Student and Staff Health, equips school nurses with practical, accessible, evidence-based tools and strategies to maintain a safe school environment, even amid extreme environmental challenges.

Enhancing Understanding: Share What School Nurses Do

There are many misconceptions among school administrators, educators, and other school staff, as well as families, regarding the role of school nurses. While many view school nurses positively, they often believe that the specialized practice of nursing is limited to first aid and assessing the severity of illnesses or injuries. The School Nursing Practice Framework provides a graphic illustration of the key practice principles —an invaluable tool for advancing the practice of school nursing and for emphasizing the student-centered activities school nurses perform to support student health, safety, and readiness to learn. Below are customizable Framework presentations to help you create a better understanding of the unique role of school nurses.
