Last week Governor Josh Green announced new coordinated state actions to protect Hawaii families from the impacts of the ongoing federal government shutdown and disruption to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

“These are challenging times for working families across Hawaii,” Governor Green said. “No one should go hungry or lose stability because of gridlock in Washington. When federal support is paused, Hawaii stands up. We take care of one another and act with urgency and aloha to protect our people.”
Here’s what Josh is doing to keep families from going hungry in Hawaii:
$250 Emergency Payments
* The state is issuing a $250 emergency relief payment per eligible individual for a total of $42.2 million in November, helping households bridge the gap created by the pause in federal SNAP funding.
$2 million for Hawaii Food Banks
* Josh has directed $2 million in state support to Hawaii’s food banks to maintain essential operations and food distribution across every island, and an additional $500,000 for the Farm to Families program.
$100 million for Families in Need
* Josh launched the Hawaii Relief Program with $100 million in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funding to provide up to four months of housing and utility assistance for families with children facing financial hardship. Families do not need to be SNAP recipients to qualify.
These actions to help the 161,400 low-income Hawaii residents receiving federal SNAP benefits and others affected by the federal government shutdown will also support local businesses.
SNAP benefits represent 7% of all food purchases in the state and an even higher percentage in low-income and rural communities, so losing SNAP payments without offsetting them would slow Hawaii's economy.
“We are coming together as one Ohana and taking action to make sure families with children don’t go hungry or lose their housing during the holidays because of the federal government shutdown,” Josh said. “It’s the right thing to do.”
