*Overcoming Barriers to Higher Education with VRS*
Picture of Sam smiling for a professional photo.

Sam first connected with Vocational Rehabilitation Services (VRS) when he was enrolled in special education in high school. VRS was presented as an option to help ease his transition to college. At the time, he was a teen “wondering if I’d be able to complete college.”

Despite his concerns, Sam graduated with a degree in graphic and interactive design from Minnesota State University Moorhead, with guidance from his VRS counselor.

Students ages 14 to 22 can access VRS student career services. Participating students get to learn about their strengths and interests, career and postsecondary education possibilities, how to gain work skills and experiences and what they’ll need to make their plan happen.

After graduation, Sam stayed in the Fargo-Moorhead area and became an active community member. He continued to work with his VRS counselor for support in his job search, refining his resume and interview skills.

Since graduation, Sam has worked as the activities coordinator with Goldmark Property Management, managing a monthly event calendar for three senior living properties. “Throughout the month I plan and run events for the residents of all three properties. I use my design skills to make event posters, monthly calendars and other promo pieces,” said Sam.

He enjoys the variety of the work. “Each day is new and exciting, with all the different events I plan,” Sam said. He finds knowing that he can make a difference in the lives of residents the most rewarding aspect of his job.

Sam hopes to eventually work with a bigger event-planning company or sports team, or even with one of the local colleges. The support from VRS made all difference, and he wants others to know the difference this can make.

VRS helps job seekers prepare for, find and keep a job, and live as independently as possible. VRS’s mission is to empower Minnesotans with disabilities to achieve their goals for employment, independent living and community integration.
