Email from Counter Extremism Project (CEP) Germany: New findings on Syrian terror suspect raise troubling questions Eye on Extremism November 6, 2025 Top Stories Reuters: Western France attacker suspected of 'self-radicalisation', minister says The driver who rammed his car into a crowd in western France on Wednesday is suspected of "self-radicalisation" and had "explicit religious references" at home, the country's Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said on Thursday. Based on a number of factors that exist with this individual, and the fact that he actually shouted 'Allahu Akbar', there are religious references in his case that are quite clear and quite explicit", Nunez said. He added however it wasn't clear at this stage if religious motivations were behind the attack, which injured five people on Oleron island off France's Atlantic coast. WELT: Germany: New findings on Syrian terror suspect raise troubling questions Investigating authorities are certain that the man was preparing an Islamist-motivated attack. During searches, materials were found that could be used to construct explosive devices. An arrest warrant has now been issued against the Syrian for preparing a serious crime that endangers the state. It is still unclear how dangerous the suspect actually was. However, the circumstances of his stay in Germany raise sensitive questions. According to what is known so far, Abdalla R. lived in Germany without attracting any attention. He had only entered the country in December 2023. In September 2024, he was granted subsidiary protection, i.e., a limited residence permit for people who face serious harm in their country of origin. Dr Hans-Jakob Schindler in conversation with Karl Finke, author of the blog series. Listen here. Analysis Washington Times: Meet the Muslim Brotherhood The Muslim Brotherhood’s mission: to establish an even mightier empire and caliphate based on Islamic supremacy, the expansion of the Dar al-Islam (the lands of Islam, contrasted with the Dar-al-harb, where wars must be waged) and the conviction that “Islam is a faith and a ritual, a nation and a nationality, a religion and a state, spirit and deed, holy text and sword.” The Brotherhood today is not monolithic. Each branch determines the best approach to make progress in its region. GW Program on Extremism: CAIR—Why History is Important On October 27, 2025, it was reported in the media that CAIR-Ohio Director Khaled Tuurani participated in an online event that included Majed al-Zeer, a Hamas official who was designated by the US government in 2024 as a Specially Designated Terrorist for his role in Hamas fundraising efforts. Specifically, Al-Zaytouna Center in Beirut hosted the conference that involved at least two panels and whose title was, “Palestinians Abroad and Regional and International Strategic Transformations in the Light of Al-Aqsa Flood.” Washington Institute for Near East Policy: Removing Syria’s Designation as a State Sponsor of Terrorism: Retaining Leverage and Ensuring Accountability Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa will be visiting Washington on November 10, nearly six months after his first meeting with President Trump. U.S. Special Envoy Tom Barrack has stated that during this visit, Sharaa will “hopefully” sign an agreement to join the U.S.-led Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS. As part of this process, the administration will likely move to lift Syria from the list of state sponsors of terrorism (SST). A credible case can be made to support this decision, given the flexibility in the SST statutes and the steps Sharaa has already taken against the Islamic State, Hezbollah, and Iran. Times of Israel: Hamas is afraid Gaza will become Lebanon. So is Israel After much excitement around the ceasefire in Gaza last month, plus no small measure of pomp and circumstance, US President Donald Trump’s 20-point peace plan has lost much of its momentum. A string of senior US officials making the pilgrimage to Kiryat Gat — a phrase no journalist ever thought they would write — injected some energy into the process, but even the ongoing visits can’t hide the fact that Trump’s vision is encountering friction at every turn. EJewishPhilanthropy: With funds pouring into fighting antisemitism — and few results — experts debate what works With a new avowedly anti-Zionist mayor taking office in the city with the largest Jewish population in the world, following two years of rising anti-Jewish incidents internationally, Jewish donors have become increasingly interested in efforts to combat antisemitism. But as antisemitism rates show no signs of abating, even as the number of initiatives to address it balloons, along with budgets to support them, it forces the question: Are these efforts productive? United States CNN: 2 New Jersey men arrested in terror plot probe on heels of Michigan arrests Two New Jersey men were arrested in a terror plot probe on the heels of arrests in Michigan in an alleged ISIS-inspired terrorist plot, said Alina Habba, acting US attorney for New Jersey. The two men are said to have been part of the same online communication group as the ones who hatched the alleged plot in Michigan, a law enforcement official close to the investigation said Wednesday. The forum was not necessarily to discuss and participate in the same plot, but to discuss their own separate schemes, the official said. One suspect is charged with conspiring to provide material support to a designated terrorist organization, while the other is charged with transmitting violent antisemitic threats across the internet to people in New Jersey and beyond, said Habba. Homeland Security Today: Arizona Extremist Leader Faces Life in Prison for Child Exploitation and Terrorism Support A federal grand jury in the District of Arizona has returned a 29-count superseding indictment against Baron Cain Martin, known online as “Convict”, 21, of Tucson, Arizona. The superseding indictment charges Martin with participating in a child exploitation enterprise, conspiring to provide material support to terrorists, conspiring to kill, kidnap or maim persons in a foreign country, producing child pornography (five counts), distributing child pornography (11 counts), coercing and enticing minors to engage in sexual activity (three counts), cyberstalking (three counts), animal crushing and distribution of animal crush videos, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Martin has been in federal custody since his arrest on federal charges on December 11, 2024. New York Times: Nick Fuentes’s Rise Puts MAGA Movement in a ‘Time of Choosing’ For much of President Trump’s second term, the political heirs of his “America First” agenda have tried to form an intellectual framework for their movement that embraces nationalism while keeping overt bigotry out of the coalition. With the rise of Nick Fuentes, a 27-year-old white nationalist, and his young, racist and antisemitic “Groyper” movement, some fear the exercise has failed. The Guardian: Heritage Foundation leader apologizes for backing Tucker Carlson’s interview with white nationalist The leader of the conservative thinktank behind Project 2025 apologized for supporting a white nationalist amid turmoil on the right over the mainstreaming of extremist ideology, but is resisting calls to resign. Kevin Roberts, the president of the Heritage Foundation, previously defended the former Fox host Tucker Carlson for having Hitler fan Nick Fuentes on his podcast without pushing back on his white supremacist views. Politico: Trump adviser to Germany’s far-right AfD: ‘We are in this together’ Alex Bruesewitz, an adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump, told leaders of the far-right Alternative for Germany, or AfD — a party labeled extremist by German authorities — that he sees them as “bold visionaries” shaping the country’s future. Times of Israel: Swastikas on NYC school bring antisemitism into focus a day after Mamdani victory A vandal scrawled swastikas on a Brooklyn Jewish school early Wednesday morning, prompting political barbs about antisemitism in New York City, a day after the far-left Israel critic Zohran Mamdani won the election to become the city’s next mayor. Photos from the scene showed two red swastikas scrawled on a wall and a window of the Magen David Yeshiva in Gravesend, Brooklyn. The school had already made news in the election when it required parents to prove they were registered to vote, amid Jewish community concerns over Mamdani. Jewish Telegraphic Agency: Mamdani condemns swastika graffiti at Brooklyn yeshiva as ‘disgusting and heartbreaking’ The incident that prompted Zohran Mamdani’s first condemnation of local antisemitism since he was elected mayor took place just minutes after the race was called in his favor. Two red swastikas were spray-painted on Magen David Yeshivah in Brooklyn on Tuesday night, according to footage shared on social media and the New York Police Department, which said the vandalism occurred at 9:53 p.m. Jewish Telegraphic Agency: Heritage Foundation staff confront president over antisemitism, defense of Tucker Carlson The president of the Heritage Foundation, Kevin Roberts, apologized to his staff on Wednesday for his refusal to condemn Tucker Carlson after the right-wing broadcaster aired a friendly interview with white nationalist Nick Fuentes. During a tense, two-hour all-hands meetings, staff members challenged Roberts’ leadership, questioned Heritage’s credibility, and warned that his stance had gravely damaged the foundation’s relationships with Jewish partners and donors. Rhode Island Current: Smithfield superintendent on leave pending review of handling of alleged antisemitism Smithfield Public Schools Superintendent Dawn Bartz is on paid administrative leave, the town’s School Committee announced Wednesday. The announcement from School Committee Chair Richard Iannitelli arrived less than 48 hours after a marathon meeting at Smithfield High School attended by hundreds of people from the community. The committee met Monday night for three hours in closed session with Bartz before emerging for a unanimous vote to hire an outside legal team to conduct an investigation into an alleged antisemitic hazing incident among football players in the boys’ locker room. Jerusalem Post: In the crosshairs: Jewish restaurants across America are under attack “FORM LINE HERE TO SUPPORT GENOCIDE” blared the black spray-painted graffiti scrawled on the sidewalk in front of Effy’s Café, an Israeli eatery on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. That was in May 2024. But since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, and the war in Gaza that followed, Israeli, Jewish, and kosher restaurants around the US have faced a wave of harassment, vandalism, and intimidation – a mix of obvious antisemitic acts, anti-Israel sentiment, and BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanction) efforts. Austria Associated Press: Weapons cache linked to Hamas found in Vienna by Austria’s intelligence service Austria’s domestic intelligence service has uncovered a weapons cache in Vienna that is believed to be linked to the Palestinian militant group Hamas for use in “possible terrorist attacks in Europe,” the government said Thursday. A 39-year-old unidentified British citizen allegedly “having close ties to the weapons cache” was arrested in London on Monday, the interior ministry statement said. France France 24: Lafarge trial: Multinational companies 'enjoying impunity, prioritising profits over human rights' It is one of the most consequential legal proceedings in modern corporate history — a trial that could redefine what accountability means in the global economy. The Lafarge case, now before French courts, marks the first time a company as a legal entity is being prosecuted in France for financing a terrorist enterprise. Even more striking, it is the first case where a corporation faces this charge for payments made through a foreign subsidiary. At its heart lies a question that has haunted global business for decades: can a multinational corporation claim ignorance of crimes committed in its own supply chain, or by its own subsidiaries, when the profits keep flowing home? For in-depth analysis and a deeper perspective, Annette Young welcomes Cannelle Lavite, Director of the Business and Human Rights Program at the ECCHR (European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights). Germany Washington Post: Officials arrest man who allegedly promised to get weapons for attack on Jewish targets in Germany A man suspected of promising to get weapons for an attack on Jewish targets in Germany was arrested Wednesday in Denmark, Germany’s top prosecutor said. The federal prosecutor says that in late May, Tawab M. promised Ali S. that he would obtain a weapon for a third person and persuade them to attack Jewish targets in Germany. Tawab M. allegedly has a history of procuring weapons, accessories and explosive devices in Denmark. Deutsche Welle: Germany's NSU neo-Nazi terror group: The final trial begins Members of the far-right terrorist group National Socialist Underground (NSU) murdered 10 people, carried out bombings and robbed banks in several German states between 2000 and 2007. In 2018, Beate Zschäpe, the sole surviving NSU member, was sentenced by the Higher Regional Court in Munich to life in prison, with the court determining a particularly severe degree of guilt. The trial was one of the biggest in Germany's postwar history. Four NSU supporters who were charged along with Zschäpe received prison sentences ranging from two and a half to 10 years. BZ: Germany strips its intelligence services of power In addition to Mossad, it is primarily the American agencies CIA, FBI, and NSA, as well as the British Secret Intelligence Service (SIS, also known as MI6), that protect Germany from terrorism. How is it that we are so heavily dependent on others? Quite simply because Germany has stripped its intelligence services of their powers. In our country, data protection takes precedence over security. While the Americans, Israelis, British, and others comb through electronic communications without cause, in Germany this is only permitted in the event of a specific threat. The Federal Intelligence Service (BND) and the Office for the Protection of the Constitution have only limited access to the three most important tools that are taken for granted in other countries: first, data retention; second, online searches; and third, source telecommunications surveillance. NLM is part of the nihilistic and dangerous Com network, short for the “Community,” which is made up a collection of chat rooms, groups, and individuals engaged in a wide variety of crimes. While ideology is often not the primary motivation for violence within Com groups, NLM in particular has adopted the imagery and language of neo-Nazism and the occult group Order of Nine Angles in its public documents. Gaza Strip / West Bank WELT: "Infiltrated by Hamas agents" – New allegations against Palestinian relief agency UNRWA At the beginning of the year, Israel banned the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) from conducting any activities on Israeli territory, accusing the agency, which employs 13,000 people and is the largest employer in the Gaza Strip, of being "infiltrated" by Hamas. Not least, the terrorist organization is said to be surviving by stealing international aid supplies. "UNRWA claims to be a humanitarian organization, but evidence shows that it has been infiltrated by Hamas operatives," says UN Watch Director Hillel Neuer. The problem is not isolated incidents, "a few bad apples," as the International Court of Justice recently ruled. "It is structural, widespread, and deliberate," Neuer continues. Washington was said to view the effort as a pilot program for a broader decommissioning and amnesty initiative for Hamas fighters, part of US President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan for ending the Gaza conflict. Under the proposal, fighters would surrender their weapons to officials from the US-led Civil-Military Coordination Center in Kiryat Gat and either be granted safe passage to a third country or be allowed to retreat to Hamas-controlled areas west of the Yellow Line. Jerusalem Post: Danon: ISF must focus on disarming Hamas, not becoming another ineffective UN force Israeli ambassador to the UN Danny Danon laid out Israel’s cautious support for the resolution put forward by the US regarding the International Stabilization Force (ISF) in Gaza, noting, however, that the force should not become another "UNIFIL," in an interview with The Jerusalem Post on Wednesday. Danon emphasized firm conditions to ensure the force does not become “another UNIFIL,” a reference to the long-criticized UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon. As a result of the blockade, blackouts are spreading across the country, and citizens are forced to wait in line for hours to buy fuel for their vehicles.
