Every day we hear new stories of people who are rising to meet this crisis and taking it as an opportunity to put service above self. Last time we heard from Kim “Dirt” Murphy. Today, we hear from Kent Johnson, an Idaho resident and Army veteran who is chipping in to help those in his community.

Meet Kent Johnson

My name is Kent Johnson and I live near New Meadows, Idaho with my wife. I was a Major in the Army and served during the Vietnam and Desert Storm eras. My brother had a kettle corn business for fun until last year and had ten five-gallon buckets of popcorn seeds left over. We found people in the community who were unemployed with large families and gave them the popcorn, which provided the kids with a rare treat.

My wife has Parkinson's but wanted to assist in this crisis so she along with 40 other women made and distributed over 2,000 masks! Sometimes she became tired because of her illness but kept on cutting and sewing.

I have also given firewood to others who ran out last winter. Most people heat with wood up here. The community has a weekend each year where we get together, split, and deliver over 200 cords of wood each year to those who can't get it for themselves.

During my time in the Army I learned mission first, people always. You don't have to do something great to make a difference. Just let people know that you care. There are plenty of opportunities to help if you look around.
