Add your name to the petition: No cuts to health care!
Dear MoveOn member,
Laura Packard from Voices for Health Care Action here. The government has been shut down for 37 days and counting—the longest in U.S. history.1 Federal workers are being forced to work without pay. Social services are being delayed or even cut.
And Republicans in Congress are refusing to come back to work and negotiate, holding our safety nets hostage to force through their disastrous budget. A budget that would hike health care costs for millions by gutting crucial Affordable Care Act provisions, leaving an even greater number of people uninsured or underinsured.
Democrats are holding the line—urging Republicans to extend ACA subsidies that will keep costs down. But Congress needs to know that people are behind this demand. That’s why we’re joining with MoveOn Civic Action to really show our people power. Will you sign the petition?
Under the Republican proposal, health care premiums could increase for some a shocking 75%—up to $700 more a year.2 Given that the majority of workers are unprepared for even a $500 emergency expense, the exorbitant increase in health care costs will be devastating.3
This is, no exaggeration, a matter of life and death.
It’s estimated nearly 50,000 people in the U.S will die every year as a direct result of the Republicans cruel cuts—cuts that benefit the wealthy at our expense.4
It's disgusting that Trump and Republicans in Congress are playing politics with our lives and our care. Add your name to the petition to show that Americans OPPOSE any cuts to our health care.
Expanded ACA subsidies have helped a record 21 million Americans afford coverage and have been especially critical for middle-class families and older adults who often earn just enough to not qualify for Medicaid but not enough to afford unsubsidized coverage.5,6
By ending automatic reenrollment in plans, letting health care premium tax credits expire, and cutting subsidies for certain immigrants, Republicans have created what some legislators are calling a "death spiral."7 More than 7 million people are on the brink of losing coverage, and everyone's health costs could increase, even those who get health insurance through their workplace.8
I personally get my health insurance through the Affordable Care Act, and am facing a 21% increase in premiums for next year in northern Virginia.
Tell Republicans in Congress: Do your job and protect our care. Add your name to the petition to demand Congress extend the ACA’s health care tax credits NOW and reopen our government.
Consider people like Doug and Shadene Butchart. Doug is a retired mechanic. His wife was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and gets her insurance through the health insurance marketplace. But with the tax credits expiring, they worry about whether she will be able to stay on her current plan or have to drop to a different tier—one that may not fully cover her rising medical costs.9
"It's very hard to try and pay all the bills and keep insurance and, if they mess around with the marketplace insurance, it's going to make it impossible for us to afford insurance," Doug said.10
They are not alone. Nearly 60% of Americans polled are "extremely" or "very" concerned about their health costs increasing.11 Those are the families that Democrats in Congress are fighting for right now—but every single member of Congress should be doing the same for their constituents.
Add your name to the petition to show the overwhelming demand for ACA tax credit extensions, and then share with three friends.
Thanks for all you do.
