Dear Friend,
Today is a crucial day for Chicago’s homeless pets: it marks the beginning of our annual You Give, They Live holiday campaign. The funds we raise in these next few short weeks don’t just support the animals in our care today—they make possible the lifesaving work we will do all year long.
This year, our PAWS Chicago family has done more to build a No Kill Chicago than ever before. Together, we are on pace to find loving homes for more than 5,000 cats and dogs, provide 21,000 free and low-cost spay/neuter surgeries, deliver 50,000 vaccinations to pets in need, and serve over 26,000 homeless and at-risk pets.
Each one of these numbers improves upon last year’s impact. More importantly, each represents a life saved, a family created, or suffering prevented. This is the power of community. This is the promise of our No Kill Chicago mission—and you are at the heart of it.
To emphasize the importance of your gift now, The Francisco Family Charitable Fund has generously offered a $20,000 You Give, They Live Challenge Match. From now through Sunday, November 23, every donation will be matched dollar for dollar, doubling your impact.

That impact is written in the lives of animals like Magic.

When he arrived at the overcrowded Chicago Animal Care and Control (CACC), Magic was just two months old—and already out of time. Sick with a painful eye ulcer and a kitten cold, he was placed on CACC’s euthanasia list. The day we received the city shelter’s plea for help was going to be Magic’s last. Magic had no one else to fight for him.
Because of you, PAWS was able to rush to his side before the clock ran out. Over the next two months, our veterinary team gave Magic painstaking care, using specialized eye drops—made from his own blood serum—to heal his cloudy eye. Slowly, the world became clear to him again. And so did his future. Soon, Magic was pouncing on toy mice in his foster home, and shortly after, he was adopted by a loving family who now can’t imagine life without him.

Our same compassionate PAWS community made a difference for Checkers, a five-year-old dog whose body was hidden beneath years of matted fur and neglect. He arrived at CACC in a trap, unrecognizable under the heavy knots of fur. Though a microchip revealed he once had an owner, no one came forward to claim him. At PAWS, staff and volunteers spent hours carefully shaving away the tangles, uncovering the gentle and grateful dog beneath. After treatment for parasites and the comfort of a warm bed, Checkers was finally able to show the world who he truly was. Within a week, he, too, found his loving family.
Magic and Checkers are alive today because people like you chose to give them a chance. And with your support, countless more pets will find the same hope and healing soon. Please make your first holiday gift today and watch your generosity be doubled by the Challenge Match.
