Dear John,
We’re thrilled to share some good news: Mainers overwhelmingly rejected Question 1 and protected our voting rights.
Mainers are smart, pragmatic people who saw Question 1 for what it was — a blatant attempt to restrict access to the ballot. Maine’s inclusive and secure voting laws already work. They ensure fair elections and help make voting accessible for everyone who’s eligible. That’s why Maine consistently ranks among the top states for voter turnout.
In 2024, nearly 75% of eligible voters cast a ballot — a record high. And even in this “off-year” election, early estimates indicate nearly 50% of Mainers showed up to make their voices heard.
If passed, Question 1 would have forced elderly voters and people with disabilities to reapply for absentee ballots every year, made people on fixed incomes pay for postage to return their ballots, and blocked elderly or rural Mainers without internet access from requesting a ballot by phone — and that’s just the start.
Our work is not done. We can still make voting even more accessible and ensure that election officials have the resources they need to do their jobs. But we won’t strengthen democracy by sowing distrust among neighbors or making it harder for people to vote, as the proponents of Question 1 tried to do.
We know there will be more fights ahead — but today, let’s celebrate this victory . From all of us at MCV, THANK YOU for everything you did Save Maine Absentee Voting. Your support made the difference.
