Voters made one thing clear last night: Gun safety wins elections.

Help keep up the momentum as we head into 2026: Donate to the Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund so we can continue to educate the public and fight for stronger gun laws, mobilize our grassroots supporters, and continue to help elect Gun Sense Candidates >>

John-

We're celebrating historic victories for gun safety during last night's election, where Gun Sense Candidates handily defeated their gun lobby-backed extremist opponents. Here are some key takeaways from last night as we look across the country:

  • Virginia: Former Moms Demand Action volunteer Abigail Spanberger was elected as the first woman governor of the Commonwealth. 13 Moms Demand Action volunteers were also elected to the Virginia General Assembly. That means our former volunteers make up 20 percent of the Virginia House Democratic Caucus.
  • New Jersey: Mikie Sherrill won her bid for Governor, helping to ensure the Garden State continues its great work to end gun violence with strong, common-sense gun legislation.
  • Moms Demand Action volunteers running for office: From Virginia to Tennessee to Ohio and New York, from school boards to state legislatures, over one hundred Moms Demand Action volunteers won their races, showing that this movement's power reaches every level of government.
  • Pennsylvania: Our gun sense majority on the PA Supreme Court remains intact after all three incumbent justices of our endorsed judges won their re-election.
  • Maine: In a state with a long history of hunting and gun ownership, voters overwhelmingly supported a ballot referendum to make Maine the 23rd state to adopt a Red Flag law.

These victories send a powerful message that gun safety is a winning issue and that the Trump administration's chaos and gun extremist MAGA candidates can't win the votes of Americans. It's concrete proof that when we pull out all the stops, we can help elect leaders committed to keeping our families safe.

While Everytown and Moms Demand Action doubled down, the once-powerful gun lobby was nowhere to be seen. Despite the NRA's claims that they were "pounding the pavement" and "deploying staff and resources to push pro-gun candidates in Virginia to victory," as of last week, total NRA spending on Virginia’s 2025 elections was just over $31,500. Everytown is on track to outspend them by more than 55-to-1. The NRA was also nowhere to be seen in New Jersey, where it spent a grand total of $0.00.

Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund supporters like you helped make this possible. Together, we knocked doors, made calls, mobilized volunteers, had the resources to run ads, and showed the country that demanding gun safety isn't just good policy—it's good politics.

But our work doesn't stop with Election Day. We need to keep building momentum heading into the year ahead, so we can continue to elect more Gun Sense Candidates up and down the ballot, fight for stronger gun laws at all levels of government, and continue our tireless work to save lives from gun violence.

Help us keep the momentum high by donating to the Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund today. Your contribution powers our life-saving work to create safer communities across the country.
