LA Resident to Plead Guilty to Role in Medicare Fraud Case
A Los Angeles resident is expected to plead guilty Wednesday to her role in a scheme to defraud Medicare out of more than $54 million via hospice and diagnostic testing services that were never provided. Sophia Shaklian, 38, of the Larchmont neighborhood, has agreed to enter a plea to a single count of health care fraud, a felony carrying a possible maximum sentence of 10 years behind bars, court papers show. Co-defendant Alex Alexsanian, 48, of Burbank, is currently facing trial in February. Shaklian was charged a year ago in Los Angeles federal court with 16 counts of health care fraud and four counts of transactional money laundering. Alexsanian is charged with one count of conspiracy to launder monetary instruments and three counts of concealment money laundering, court papers show. Prosecutors allege Shaklian, often using aliases, managed and submitted claims for seven health care providers enrolled with Medicare and located in Los Angeles County. Palisades arson trial delayed, accused asks to reconsider release on bail
The man accused of causing the Palisades Fire has agreed to delay the start of his trial on federal arson charges until April, 2026, according to court filings. Jonathan Rinderknecht also asked the court to reconsider a judge's decision to deny him release on bail until trial, according to a request filed Tuesday. Rinderknecht, 29, faces 3 federal felony charges for allegedly igniting a brush fire in the Palisades Highlands on January 1, which, after it was extinguished on the surface, the ATF said continued to smolder underground in roots before it reignited in high winds January 7 and became the Palisades Fire. Rinderknecht pleaded not guilty last month, and his defense lawyer, Steve Haney, said he plans to aggressively challenge the evidence allegedly linking Rinderknecht to the first fire, called the Lachman Fire, and the Palisades Fire. In a joint stipulation with prosecutors filed Tuesday Haney told the court he needs more time to investigate the case, consult with experts, and prepare for trial, making the initial trial date set for December 16, 2025, unmanageable. Haney also told the court he has 2 other trials scheduled for December, and federal prosecutors told the court they did not object to the delay.

Dog tests positive for meth after morning walk in North Hollywood
A couple said their dog became violently ill after eating meth after a Sunday morning walk in North Hollywood. Karla Vicuña said her dog Atreyu started acting erratically, crying and whimpering after the morning walk. "His eyes were like just moving around, so something that we've never seen before on him," Vicuña said. After Atreyu tested positive for methamphetamines, Vicuña and her husband believe the husky-shepard mix may have eaten something in the alley behind their home. "The doctor said that he was grateful that we got there so fast because he could have had a seizure," Vicuña said. "His heart rate was over the charts. He had a fever." Vicuña said the 12-hour hospital visit cost them $2,000. In 2023, the California Animal Health and Food Safety Lab System found that marijuana and amphetamines were among the top 20 toxins most asked about on the pet poison helpline.

City Council Unanimously Votes for Dept. of Tourism to Waive Dine LA Participation Fees
The Los Angeles City Council Tuesday instructed the Department of Tourism to waive participation fees for restaurants in the Dine LA program. In a unanimous vote, the council approved a motion introduced by council members Monica Rodriguez and Katy Yaroslavsky on Oct. 7. “I want to just emphasize how important it is that we continue to uplift, promote and support the food scene that truly defines Los Angeles,” Councilwoman Ysabel Jurado said. Jurado said her office compiled a list earlier this year of participating restaurants in her 14th Council District, encompassing downtown and northeast Los Angeles neighborhoods. “We were surprised when we learned that there was only one restaurant in Boyle Heights, one restaurant in Little Tokyo and one restaurant in El Serano,” Jurado said.
