As of this morning, this is the longest government shutdown ever.

Instead of negotiating an end to the shutdown that satisfies everyone whose votes he needs to fund the government, Donald Trump is looking for procedural tricks that his own Senate doesn’t seem interested in. Even after last night’s election results, the shutdown could drag on for weeks on end.

The workers who send our Social Security checks, who care for our veterans, and who keep our planes in the air are still working without pay, and hundreds of thousands more are sitting by their phones, unpaid and forbidden from traveling in case Congress reopens.

Meanwhile, their rent is still due and their families are hungry. And Trump is threatening to illegally withhold the backpay of furloughed workers.
