Last night was a historic night for our country Dear Email, After ten months of darkness under an administration hostile to the First Amendment, a period marked by the endorsement and enablement of apartheid and genocide, the kidnapping of Americans for their political speech, and a full-fledged campaign of intimidation against our communities, last night, we fought back with our votes. Records were broken across the country, bringing us a glimmer of hope and proving to the other side that we will not back down, we will not be intimidated, and that the will of the people can no longer be overridden by the financial power of the Zionist lobby and the far right-wing. Amongst these record-breaking wins, we celebrate and congratulate the following: - Ghazala Hashmi made history by being elected as Virginia’s Lieutenant Governor. She is the first Muslim to win a statewide office in the U.S. and the first Indian American elected to a statewide office. Being one of the members who flipped the state Blue, Hashmi is proof that voters in Virginia and across the country are embracing leadership that genuinely reflects the diversity of today’s America.
- Zohran Mamdani, who made history as the first Muslim Mayor of New York City. He won despite a coordinated campaign by the Zionist lobby, Israel, the Trump Administration, and even some Democrats to defeat him. They poured billions of dollars into the race and deployed Islamophobic tropes to tarnish him, and they still lost.
- Despite facing attacks from the right, condemnation from pro-Israel groups and outlets, and criticism from within his own party, Delegate Sam Rasoul was re-elected to represent Virginia’s 38th District. He has stood firm and taken a vocal stance on Palestinian rights, and his victory is a clear rejection of smear campaigns and political pressure meant to silence principled leadership.
- Ayah Al-Zubi, elected to the Cambridge City Council At Large.
- Nadia Rasul, elected to the Hilliard City Council.
- Lastly, but certainly not least, the residents of Somerville voted to pass a divestment ballot measure, making it the third city in Massachusetts this year to take action in support of Palestinian rights and ethical governance and joining a growing movement of cities refusing to let their leaders use public dollars to fund apartheid, occupation, or genocide.
These are only a few significant wins that point to the shift that has occurred on the grassroots level in America, which is unshakeable. It continues to grow and signals to the Democratic establishment that they must change the status quo, or they will be replaced. Americans no longer tolerate our tax dollars being used to fund occupation and genocide. Americans no longer tolerate our leaders working harder for a corrupt foreign entity than for the people they were elected to serve. The candidates above won because they understood what the people needed, and they showed up ready to serve them. Their victories weren’t handed to them through billions of dollars spent by AIPAC and its likes; they were earned through authenticity, accountability, and a genuine commitment and connection to the communities they represent. If party leaders, such as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, refuse to catch up to their base, they will be left behind by it. In solidarity, Americans for Justice in Palestine Action |
