Dear Neighbors,

As of November 1, Minnesotans have lost most access to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP) benefits due to the Republican-led government shutdown. SNAP supports over 440,000 Minnesotans—including children, working families, seniors, and people with disabilities—to get essential food, while also boosting the state's economy. Every $1 in SNAP benefits generates $1.50 in local economic activity, making it vital for both families and Minnesota's strength.

However, cuts from Congressional Republicans and Trump threatens this security by cutting over $120 billion from SNAP over 10 years, putting these vulnerable groups at risk of hunger and poor health outcomes. The USDA has told our counties that there aren't sufficient funds for SNAP's November payments. I want to be very clear: this is NOT true. The USDA has at least $5 billion in contingency funds that the Administration can and should release to provide even partial benefits to eligible households for November. I was proud to join my DFL colleagues in _sending a letter [ [link removed] ]_ addressing President Trump and Secretary Brooke Rollins' unconscionable cut to SNAP.

Thanks to the leadership of Attorney General Keith Ellison in litigating this case, last Friday, _two federal judges have ruled [ [link removed] ]_ that the Trump administration must continue to fund the SNAP food aid program using contingency funds during the government shutdown. It shouldn't have taken a court ruling to tell President Trump and his cronies that food is essential.

Despite the court ruling, President Trump and Republicans are using the government shutdown as a weapon—a calculated act of cruelty that rips food and vital aid from our most vulnerable: children, veterans, and people with disabilities. While this regime pads the pockets of the ultra-wealthy, they actively starve our neediest citizens. This is not 'politics as usual' this is just cruel.

In our community, the City of Saint Paul has mobilized our libraries and recreation centers as neighborhood collection sites for food and essential items, which will support local organizations who directly serve those most in need.
