SIGN NOW: Tell Congress – Don’t let Trump punish voters in cities like New York or states like Virginia, California, or New Jersey that rejected his agenda >>
John, voters across the country sent a powerful message yesterday: they’re ready to move forward – they rejected Trump’s cruel, chaotic agenda loud and clear.
We know from recent history what the next response from the White House could be: punishing voters, candidates, and anyone else who doesn't give him his way.
Even before the election, Trump threatened to slash federal dollars that fund hospitals, housing, and schools in New York City [1] if they dared to vote for now mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani. [2]
And we have every reason to believe he’ll follow through.
In recent months, he has specifically targeted places that didn’t vote for him last year – canceling billions of dollars for trains, tunnels, and clean energy in blue states [3], and even openly bragging about approving disaster aid to states that voted for him while denying it to states that voted against him. [4]
But here’s the good news, John: Congress has the power of the purse, and they can stop Trump from weaponizing the government against the people they represent… if they have the political will to do it.
SIGN THE PETITION: Tell Congress to block any attempts to punish New York City, California, Virginia, New Jersey, or anywhere else that voted against Trump last night >>
Trump promised to make life in America less expensive, but he’s failed by every measure. [5] So instead, he’s gone on a revenge tour – shutting down the government, tearing immigrant families apart, and gutting crucial programs like SNAP and Medicaid.
Voters aren’t stupid – they saw through Trump’s political games and made their voices heard at the ballot box.
Elections are the ultimate poll – and yesterday’s was the clearest sign yet that Americans are fed up with Trump’s division and destruction.
But instead of listening, or even changing course on his unpopular agenda, it’s all too likely that Trump’s response to this loss will be to turn the screws even further on his perceived enemies.
That’s not what a leader does. And, if members of Congress help him do it – or roll over while Trump tramples on our Constitution and our ability to access healthcare and feed our families – then they're complicit in his cruel agenda.
Our lawmakers must make it clear: no president can cut off funding just because he doesn’t like how a state or city voted. We won’t let Trump use our taxpayer dollars to settle his personal political scores.
Add Your Name: Demand Congress assert its power of the purse and stop any retaliation Trump tries to push against cities and states that reject his agenda.
Together, we can keep building the country voters chose last night – one rooted in fairness, democracy, and delivering for working people.
Thanks for all you do,
The team at Common Cause
