The people triumphed over billionaires yesterday, proving
beyond a shadow of a doubt that when we fight for bold policies that help
the working class, we can win big.
Zohran Mamdani rocketed to victory last night, overcoming millions of
dollars spent by billionaires to defeat his agenda to make New York City a
city that working people can afford.
The pundits may want to dismiss this win as New York being New York, but
here’s the reality: The bold, progressive candidate who campaigned on a
real affordability agenda won.
That can happen anywhere.
And let’s talk about who lost. A disgraced former governor endorsed by
Trump, who can’t take no for an answer, who sold out working families to
get donations from billionaires, and who only spoke about what we can’t do
and what’s not possible.
Voters proved that all the MAGA-billionaire money in the world still could
not buy New York City. They rejected the old politics of fear and ushered
in an era of new leadership. Mamdani’s win is a beacon of hope that we CAN
make our government work for working people.
It’s not radical to fight for universal childcare. It’s not radical to
think transportation should be fast and free. It’s not radical to make
housing affordable. In fact, these things are the reason why we have
government in the first place — to make life better for the people we
serve.
And voters overwhelmingly agree, not just in New York. Affordability — not
the billionaire agenda — wins all across America.
Here in Boston, Josh Kraft — the son of a billionaire with infinite money
— wasn’t even on the ballot last night against Mayor Michelle Wu because
he dropped out after an embarrassing 49-point loss in the September
primary.
In Virginia and New Jersey, Democratic champions Abigail Spanberger and
Mikie Sherrill defeated Trump-wannabes, catapulting to victory with a
clear message to make life more affordable for working people. They
championed ideas like more affordable housing, freezing utility rates,
lowering health care costs.
So don’t tell me that Democrats need to suck up to billionaires in order
to win elections. Nope. Voters are saying — shouting — that they want
Democrats to fight for working people. To fight HARD. No longer can we
stay in a defensive crouch. No longer can we nibble around the edges and
hope we can settle for safe, incremental change. We’ve got to stiffen our
spines, stand together, and fight.
That’s exactly what Governor Newsom and California voters did by
overwhelmingly passing Prop 50 yesterday. It’s a critical stopgap that
prevents the GOP from aggressively tipping the scales with their
unprecedented mid-year gerrymandering campaign. And unlike what the GOP
forced through in Texas, this temporary measure was passed by voters — not
by a phone call from the President. Californians showed that we will not
just stand by and accept that Trump is destroying our democracy.
Today I’m waking up feeling hopeful and energized. The path forward for
the Democratic party is clear: We win when we fight like hell for working
people. When we champion bold ideas even if billionaires don’t like them.
When we aspire to govern in ways that may not have been tried before,
rather than settle with “that’s never going to happen.” When we stand up
to the extremism of Donald Trump’s administration.
Voters sent us a clear message. And I’m going to do everything in my power
to get our government to listen.
Thanks for being a part of this,
Elizabeth
