Protecting Big Cats – July 23rd

Upon the release of Netflix’s Tiger King, Gabriela Cowperthwaite, director of Blackfish, started getting asked a lot of questions from her friends and media outlets. “Why didn’t Tiger King help big cats?” — Gabriela’s fans wanted her reaction. Joined by a panel of experts, Gabriela will explore the issue of big cat ownership—and the industry that exploits them for profit.

Panelists include Animal Legal Defense Fund Staff Attorney Daniel Waltz, Humane Society of the United States Senior Strategist for Captive Wildlife Lisa Wathne, Animal Welfare Institute Senior Policy Advisor Kate Dylewsky, Born Free Head of Animal Welfare & Captivity Chris Draper, and Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge Vice President Scott Smith.

COVID-19: Rethinking our Relationship with Animals – July 29th

The Animal Legal Defense Fund is developing a series of white papers, which outline policy strategies to reduce zoonotic disease transmission and risks. This webinar will provide an overview of the first white paper in the series — COVID-19 and Animals — which discusses the root causes of zoonotic diseases and the industries putting the public in the most danger. Specifically, we will discuss modern food production, including factory farming, which involves billions of high-risk interactions between humans and animals, as well as various other human-animal interactions due to the wildlife trade, habitat loss and human encroachment, and climate change.

How to Advocate for Animals With or Without a Law Degree: Animals in Criminal Law – August 6th

Although animals are property under the law, they are property unlike any other. In the context of criminal law, animals can be the victims of crime entitled to certain statutory protections. At the same time, they are also living evidence. And, when an animal’s owner is the defendant, the defendant may still have a property interest in the animal. In this webinar, Senior Staff Attorneys David Rosengard and Jamie Contreras will discuss animals’ status in the context of criminal law and how lawyers and nonlawyers alike can effectively advocate for animals who suffer cruelty.

Using Local Legislation to Protect Animals: Fur Bans – August 20th

Learn how to fight back against the cruel fur industry by passing a fur ban in your community! Animals farmed for their fur endure horrific abuse before being killed through gassing, electrocution, neck-breaking, and poisoning. Led by Animal Legal Defense Fund Campaigns Manager Elizabeth Holtz, this webinar will walk you through the mechanics of fur production, the policy issues — including animal cruelty, environmental impacts, and public health, and a round-up of existing international, state, and local laws prohibiting the sale of fur.

All webinars are available to stream shortly after airing. Check out previously recorded webinars, including Stress and Zoonotic Diseases and Federal Legislation: Current Issues & New Ideas, on our website.

I hope you can join us!

For the animals,

Stephen Wells, Executive Director
