John,

If you don’t like something, change it. This election cycle, two progressive champions took that advice to heart.

In Lockhart, Taylor Burge, a long-time community advocate, watched last year as a 4-3 majority of her city council ignored the will of the people and refused to implement the marijuana decriminalization policy over 67% of voters approved.

Like many of us, Taylor had worked hard to get out the vote for marijuana decriminalization, knocking doors and talking to her neighbors. When she saw that one of the city council members who voted against implementation was up for reelection this year, she launched her own bid for the seat.

Taylor, a mom and a small business owner, won that seat last night. Her victory has flipped the balance of power on the dais. We look forward to working with her and the city of Lockhart to continue to fight for meaningful policy change at the local level.

In Kyle, Claudia Zapata led the organizing effort to cancel the city’s contract with Flock Safety, a privately owned mass surveillance company that has proven time and again to be an irresponsible steward of our data. A majority of the Kyle City Council voted to keep contracting with Flock, and approved yet another contract with the company just last month.

But Claudia had a sense that the voters of Kyle might be more receptive to her message than the powers that be. So she mounted a grassroots campaign for city council, managed by the same people who organized with her against Flock.

Last night Claudia won a resounding 62% of the vote, unseating the incumbent, and garnering more of the electorate than any other citywide candidate. Her campaign is a testament to staying true to your principles, even in the face of organized opposition.

Ground Game Texas PAC is thrilled to congratulate these two powerhouses on their well-deserved wins! They are an important example of the necessity of civic engagement.

When we organize, we win.
