John, The U.S. Senate is preparing to vote on a bill that could sentence millions of acres of trees to the chopping block. The "Fix Our Forests" Act could fast-track logging projects across the country, casting a threat that spans from the towering evergreens in the Pacific Northwest to the verdant hardwoods of Appalachia. This bill is moving fast. If we don't take action, the forests we love could be reduced to seas of stumps. Tell your U.S. senators: Don't be fooled by the "Fix Our Forests" Act. Each forest is unique, a complex ecosystem stewarded by trees perfectly evolved for the landscape. They shelter plants and animals found nowhere else, provide clean drinking water and inspire awe and appreciation in visitors from near and far. These habitats exist in a state of equilibrium, one that is maintained through the existence of laws like the National Environmental Policy Act and the Endangered Species Act.1 These are the very same laws that provisions in the "Fix Our Forests" Act would weaken by exempting millions of acres of federal land from review.2 We can't allow the government shutdown to lull us into inaction -- the bill just passed out of the U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee.3 The time to speak up for our forests is now. Contact your U.S. senators today. Faced with climate change and decades of poor forest management, forests are increasingly threatened by catastrophic wildfires. But the expanded logging enabled by provisions in the "Fix Our Forests" Act is not the answer. Excessive logging leaves behind highly flammable brush piles and allows more sunlight in to parch the forest floor. The timber industry also often targets larger, older trees that are naturally more fire-resistant.4 What our forests need is science-based management with community insight -- the very things this bill would block. Thank you for defending our trees, Ellen Montgomery |
