Last night was a great night ... for everyone ... not just the Democratic Party.
But what a night for the Democratic Party! We are a party on its toes, no longer on its heels -- from coast to coast -- from sea to shining sea.
Here in California, we passed Proposition 50 by an overwhelming margin with a historic turnout. And I want to thank ALL OF YOU who worked so hard to make this victory possible.
If you donated your time or your money, if you lent your voice online and certainly if you mailed-in your ballot or stood in line to vote YES yesterday, what we accomplished was nothing short of extraordinary.
This was not just about drawing lines on a map, it was about holding the line on what makes us who we are.
But none of us can be naive. Donald Trump understands his position and unpopularity, so he will continue to work to rig the midterm elections before one single vote is cast.
We are seeing him take action all across this country: Redrawing maps in Missouri, North Carolina, Indiana and inevitably in Florida. They are not screwing around.
But that is not all.
In June of this year, we saw 4,000 National Guard troops federalized in the state of California. We saw active duty Marines not sent overseas, but sent to the second largest city in the country.
We said it was a preview of things to come. And it is happening now.
When we kicked off this campaign at the Democracy Center, Donald Trump sent his private police force that increasingly appears to have taken an oath to Donald Trump, not the Constitution. He sent them to intimidate.
Just yesterday, in Los Angeles, Donald Trump called up the border patrol and sent them to Dodger Stadium to suppress the vote in America's second largest city. People in tactical gear sent out to intimidate.
But it didn't work.
Yesterday California sent a message to Donald Trump: no crowns, no thrones, No Kings.
So today, I am proud. But I am very mindful about the state of things in this country. Donald Trump does not believe in free and fair elections: period, full stop.
It is not complicated. It is self-evident to anyone paying attention. And it won't stop. This is just a preview of things to come.
My call today is that we all have something to contribute going forward.
We need Virginia ... we need Maryland ... we need our friends in New York and Illinois and Colorado -- we need to see other states meet this moment head-on as well.
To recognize what we're up against in 2026.
Because if we do, we will de facto end Donald Trump's presidency as we know it the moment Speaker Jeffries is sworn in as the next Speaker of the House.
It is all on the line in 2026.
Again, thank you to everyone who stood up not just for our democracy, but for those who are feeling intimidated, for those who are struggling to get by, and for those who believe in the notion of checks and balances.
We won last night.
But the fight goes on.
Gavin Newsom
ℹ️ To my fellow Democrats — don't scroll past this. We cannot rest after last night's victories. Donald Trump certainly is not. 🇺🇸
We need Virginia ... we need Maryland ... we need our friends in New York and Illinois and Colorado -- we need to see other states meet this moment head-on as well.
God help us if we're not successful. We may have enjoyed our last free and fair election. They're redrawing districts to hold the House; going after ActBlue and Democrats' ability to fundraise; going after colleges and the free press... Donald Trump is not screwing around.
