Hey John

I wanted to send you a quick note because I know you’re one of the people on our list who cares about stopping facial recognition surveillance.

We’re at a tipping point with this issue. Facial recognition is spreading incredibly quickly. It’s in our schools. It’s on our streets. It’s being used not just by police and government agencies, but by big corporations looking to profit from our biometric data.

Thanks to the backlash we’ve generated, lawmakers are finally starting to act. We’ve done so much work to raise awareness about the dangers of this invasive technology, and now real legislation has finally been introduced to ban its use.

We’re planning ahead for the next few months right now, and we want to make getting this legislation passed a top priority. It’s essential that we seize this moment when people are finally paying attention and lawmakers are listening. If we let it slip by, we might not get another chance.

But here’s the problem: we’re running low on the types of funds we mainly raise through grassroots donations that allow us to fight for or against specific legislation like the Facial Recognition and Biometric Technology Moratorium Act of 2020.

For any tax law nerds out there—most of our grassroots donations from emails like this go to our 501(c)4, which is a non-profit that can do lobbying and pressure elected officials to pass legislation. We can use the grants that we apply for through foundations and charitable organizations to do public education, but we can’t use them to drive calls to Congress, put up billboards, or pressure specific lawmakers to support legislation like this. We use crowdfunding for that.

A lot of people have had to cancel their monthly donations because they lost their jobs due to COVID-19. Looking at the numbers, we need to sign up at least 100 more monthly donors in July to be able to really run the kind of campaign we’ll need to get this bill passed and ban facial recognition.

Will you be a hero in the battle against Orwellian surveillance and sign up now to chip in $5, $20, or heck even $50 a month for the duration of this legislative fight?

BECOME A MONTHLY DONOR

Facial recognition scares me. The more I learn about the ways it can be used to violate our rights at a mass scale, the more passionate I feel about stopping it. It’s not enough to organize petitions and post about it on social media. We need to get strategic and do everything in our power to ACTUALLY stop the spread of this surveillance tech.

I’m all in to stop facial recognition. Are you?

Yes, I’ll become a monthly donor to help fight for legislation to ban facial recognition.

Sorry, I can’t donate monthly, but I’ll make a one-time donation right now.

If you’re unable to give at all right now, we totally understand. We’ll keep fighting for your basic rights in the digital age. Thanks for all you do.
