Voters showed up, and the efforts of this community paid off.
What a night!
Democrats just won every race Swing Left was involved in!
In California, Proposition 50, also known as the Election Rigging Response Act, has passed! And in Virginia, Democrats flipped three statewide offices, and all eight candidates that Swing Left supported for the House of Delegates won:
- Abigail Spanberger—a 2018 Swing Left alumna—has flipped the Virginia governor’s office blue, giving Democrats full control of Virginia’s government for the first time since 2021. With a Democratic legislature behind her, Spanberger will be able to move forward a blue-state agenda.
- Ghazala Hashmi has flipped the lieutenant governor’s office as well. As the tie-breaking vote in the state Senate, she’ll play a pivotal role in advancing key legislation and ensuring progress doesn’t get stalled by partisan gridlock.
- Jay Jones has flipped the attorney general’s office, adding Virginia to the list of states that can bring lawsuits against the Trump administration to defend our rights, hold them accountable, and serve as a legal check against overreach.
- In the House of Delegates, Democrats have expanded their majority thanks to wins by all eight candidates that Swing Left supported: Elizabeth Guzman (House District 22), John McAuliff (House District 30), Stacey Carroll (House District 64), Jessica Anderson (House District 71), Leslie Mehta (House District 73), Lindsey Dougherty (House District 75), Virgil Thornton, Sr. (House District 86), and Kacey Carnegie (House District 89). This means Democrats will be able to take the next step in a major redistricting initiative that could shift more U.S. House seats toward Democrats—mitigating the unfair gains Republicans have made by drawing more safe red districts in states like Texas, Missouri, and North Carolina.
- The passing of Prop 50 means California’s congressional districts will be temporarily redrawn ahead of the midterms in 2026. It’s a major win for Democrats’ chances of flipping the U.S. House, and a big setback for Republican efforts to gerrymander their way into a permanent majority.
Tonight’s results are a sign that voters are rejecting the extreme, unpopular policies coming from President Trump and the Republican Party—and that the country is ready to turn the page.
And make no mistake: The time, money, and effort put in by the Swing Left community helped secure these victories. Swing Left volunteer-led groups knocked on more than 82k doors, made more than 129k phone calls, and raised over $336k to help elect these Democrats in Virginia. And in California, Swing Left volunteers knocked on more than 111k doors and made more than 327k phone calls to turn out the vote in support of Prop 50!
Now, as we look toward the midterms in 2026, it’s time for us to double down on our work to flip the U.S. House and put a big check on Trump.
A key part of Swing Left’s strategy to win back the House is listening deeply to all swing district voters—to help Democrats rebuild trust. Our program, Ground Truth, reimagines traditional door knocking by starting earlier, knocking every door, and sending detailed insights to campaigns so they can speak to what voters’ actually experience.
Stay tuned for more updates on that front very soon, including how you can help.
In the meantime, thank you for everything you’ve done to make tonight possible. And make sure to celebrate these wins. You’ve earned it!
