We did it, John!
Tonight, voters in Virginia kept the House of Delegates blue, and flipped the governorship – delivering a Democratic trifecta. Abigail Spanberger will be the first female governor of Virginia, and Sister District alumna Ghazala Hashmi the first Muslim woman ever elected to a statewide office, as lieutenant governor.
In fact, every single Sister District candidate in Virginia won tonight.
And, in Minnesota, Amanda Hemmingsen-Jaeger won her special election to keep the Minnesota Senate blue. Along with winning a MN House special election earlier this year, we have ensured that the MN state legislature stays in Democratic control and can continue to advance progress on issues like reproductive freedom, climate action, voting rights, and education.
Ballots are still being counted in Mississippi, and we will provide updates on our three candidates there soon. But we wanted to share the names of our 15 incredible candidates who delivered a Sister District sweep of Virginia tonight:
- Elizabeth Guzman (VA HD-22)
- Delegate Nadarius Clark (VA HD-84)
- Kimberly Pope Adams (VA HD-82)
- Delegate Joshua Cole (VA HD-65)
- Delegate Michael Feggans (VA HD-97)
- Lily Franklin (VA HD-41)
- Delegate Phil Hernandez (VA HD-94)
- Jessica Anderson (VA HD-71)
- Karen "Kacey" Carnegie (VA HD-89)
- Lindsey Dougherty (VA HD-75)
- Delegate Michelle Maldonado (VA HD-20)
- Leslie Mehta (VA HD-73)
- May Nivar (VA HD-57)
- Delegate Shelly Simonds (VA HD-70)
- Delegate Josh Thomas (VA HD-21)
John, these wins belong to you. Your phone calls, your postcards, your donations, and your events made a meaningful difference in Virginia, which will remain the last state in the South without an abortion ban.
Tonight’s results are proof of what we can do when we work together, year after year. Across five cycles in Virginia, the Sister District community has raised more than $3M directly for our candidates and partner organizations, and reached out to more than 3M voters. Our political staff has stood shoulder-to-shoulder with candidates, helping them run winning campaigns and deliver results for the people they serve.
And while this election might be a thrilling bellwether for the midterms, it’s not the finish line. We remain laser-focused on building power in key states every year this decade so that we can be in the strongest position possible for redistricting in 2031.
Next year, we have our eyes on critical battlegrounds like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and more. If our wins tonight make you as excited as we are to hit the ground running in 2026, please help kickstart our work with a contribution of $20.26 right now.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.
In gratitude,
The Sister District Team
