We have some great Election Day news.

Denver voters decisively passed Referendum 310, a ballot initiative upholding the city’s ordinance ending the sale of flavored tobacco products – including flavored e-cigarettes, menthol cigarettes, and flavored cigars!

It's another major victory for kids over the tobacco industry. And it bolsters our nationwide campaign to stop the industry from using candy-flavored products to target and addict young people.

BACKGROUND

After years of campaigning by our coalition, the Denver City Council passed an ordinance last December ending the sale of flavored tobacco products – because 81% of kids who use tobacco start with a flavored product. Then, tobacco industry interests – including tobacco giants Philip Morris International and Altria – once again put profits over health and sought to overturn this good law. 

But today, they were defeated by a strong, diverse coalition of over 70 health, education, civil rights, and community organizations that supported the ordinance.

By ending the sale of flavored tobacco products, Denver’s leaders and voters are creating a healthier future for kids and the entire city. And they're part of a growing movement.

Since our campaign to stop flavored tobacco started, six states and approximately 400 localities have passed laws restricting the sale of these products.
