For 1.4 million federal workers, this isn't hypothetical. Today marks Day 35 of the government shutdown—now tied for the longest in American history.1 Tomorrow, it will be the longest shutdown ever.
That's why MoveOn is teaming up with The Labor Force to help provide grocery gift cards to federal workers not receiving paychecks, while continuing to fight to stop millions of us from losing health care and pushing Republicans to end this unconscionable shutdown.

At least 670,000 federal workers have been furloughed—told to stay home without pay. Another 730,000 are deemed "essential" and forced to keep working without paychecks.2 They're showing up to answer phones at Social Security offices, conduct medical research, process veterans' benefits—all without paychecks to keep the lights on at home.
Most of us know what it's like when money is tight. Maybe you've been there yourself—stretching every dollar, choosing between paying the electric bill and buying groceries, taking on debt just to get by. That's the reality for federal workers right now—and they have no idea when their next paycheck will come.
They're maxing out credit cards. Taking out emergency loans against their retirement savings. Lining up at food banks for the first time in their lives.3 And Donald Trump and congressional Republicans simply don't care.
Trump and his allies in Congress are holding the government hostage while they slash health care and cut subsidies that make health care more affordable for working families. They're willing to let 1.4 million workers go without pay, let 42 million Americans lose food assistance, and inflict billions in damage on our economy.
The cruelty is the point.
The Labor Force, a nonprofit organization dedicated to building the labor movement, has already distributed nearly 900 grocery gift cards to federal workers—but they've been overwhelmed by the need.4 They’ve had to pause accepting new applications while they raise more money. Every dollar we raise for The Labor Force will go directly toward $250 grocery gift cards for workers who need help putting food on the table.
Meanwhile, MoveOn is organizing to fight back against Republicans' plans to strip health care from millions and drive up premiums—because federal workers shouldn't have to choose between paying for groceries today and affording their health care tomorrow.
This is about whether we have each other's backs when the powerful and ultra wealthy don't care about working people.
