The more chaotic things get, the more I feel the impulse to scramble for ground. I keep turning to the words of Pema Chodron to help me orient amidst the chronic uncertainty of these times:
All I see now as I look out of my eyes at the world, I see that a lot of us are just running around in circles pretending that there’s ground where there actually isn’t any ground. And that somehow, if we could learn to not be afraid of groundlessness, not be afraid of insecurity and uncertainty, it would be calling on an inner strength that would allow us to be open and free and loving and compassionate in any situation. But as long as we keep trying to scramble to get ground under our feet and avoid this uneasy feeling of groundlessness and insecurity and uncertainty and ambiguity or paradox, any of that, then the wars will continue. The racial prejudice will continue. The hatred against people of a different, of a — you don’t agree with their sexual preferences. You don’t agree with their religion. You don’t agree with their skin color. You don’t agree with their whatever, you know? Their politics. It will always continue because you can’t avoid being triggered. What triggers you can get less and less in your life. But, if you’re trying to avoid being triggered, I read something recently where someone said that’s like becoming a celibate nun, like me, or monk and then trying to get rid of all the sexually attractive people in the world in order to keep your vows. You know, it just doesn’t work. You have to work on your side of it, right?
This moment (and moon) is asking us to reexamine our relationship with security. How are we scrambling for ground, stability, comfort, security and can we let go and let in the unexpected? Here are some reflection questions to guide your practice:
- Where/how are we resisting transformation?
- Where/how are we caught up in false illusions of security?
- Where/how are we hiding in comfort and avoiding uncertainty?
On the eve of this full moon in Taurus, we are being reminded that we have everything we need AND we deserve better. This election season is offering us a choice point - either we stay obedient to a system that isn’t designed to care for us, or we rebuild our own.
Join me on Wednesday, November 5th at 9PST/12EST for Movement for the Movement as we ground in practice, detox from illusions of safety and security and reimagine systems of care that work for all of us.
