Right now, families across Nevada are feeling the painful effects of Donald Trump’s refusal to fully fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) despite a court order directing him to do so. SNAP is one of the most effective anti-hunger programs in the country.

In light of this, local nonprofits and food banks are once again being forced to fill the gaps that our federal government refuses to address. It’s unacceptable — but Nevadans are springing into action to help their neighbors.

Organizations like Three Square Food Bank in Southern Nevada and the Food Bank of Northern Nevada are doing heroic work to keep families fed. But even their extraordinary efforts can’t match the scale of what SNAP provides.

• For every one meal a food bank can provide, SNAP provides nine

• As of 2023, adults aged 18–59 made up the largest share of participants (42%)

• Nearly 62% of SNAP participants are in families with children. Among households with children, 55% are single-parent households.

• The average gross monthly income for a SNAP household was $731, with an average net income of $336

That’s why this moment is so critical. We need both immediate community support and federal accountability.

And just as importantly, stay engaged. Speak out. Demand that our leaders fully fund SNAP and stop shifting the burden onto Nevada’s already stretched nonprofits.

Nevadans take care of each other, but we deserve a government that fulfills its duty and follows the law, too.
