Deputy Andrew Nunez was shot and killed while responding to a domestic violence call on Oct. 27 in Rancho Cucamonga. The suspect, Angelo Jose Saldivar, 47, was involved in an alleged domestic violence incident involving his ex-spouse and several witnesses. Deputy Nunez was first to arrive on the scene, and Saldivar opened fire, killing the deputy, according to the San Bernardino County DA's Office. Saldivar then led police on a high-speed motorcycle pursuit. Saldivar hopped on the 210 Freeway and was clocked by SkyFOX going more than 100 mph at multiple points along the eastbound lanes. Saldivar then crashed and flew off his bike after hitting a vehicle on the freeway. He was placed into custody and taken to the hospital. On November 3, the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office filed multiple charges against Saldivar including, murder, attempted kidnapping, assault with a semiautomatic firearm, discharge of a firearm, evading an officer, false imprisonment by violence, and battery on a spouse. FOX 11 Man shot by police after holding girlfriend hostage, LAPD says A use-of-force investigation is underway after officers fired their weapon at a domestic violence suspect, who is accused of threatening his girlfriend with a firearm while holding her hostage in Northridge. The initial incident began at 2 a.m. Sunday when officers responded to the area of Balcom Avenue and Rayen Street off White Oak Avenue in Northridge after a caller reported hearing fighting and a woman crying, the Los Angeles Police Department said Monday. When officers arrived at the home on Balcom Avenue, they found a man, who was later identified as Louis Jordan Cortez, holding a woman, who later turned out to be his girlfriend, hostage at gunpoint. After Cortez failed to surrender and refused to drop his weapon, officers opened fire, the LAPD said. “During the incident, Cortez fired one round from his handgun at the victim,” police said in a statement. Even after being shot by police, Cortez did not immediately surrender and remained in the front yard of the home, the LAPD said. Once officers negotiated his surrender, Cortez was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for a gunshot wound. Once he’s released from the hospital, Cortez will be booked for assault with a deadly weapon, the LAPD added. The gun used by Cortez was recovered from the scene to be part of the investigation. No officer or neighbor was hurt during the incident. The LAPD did not elaborate on the condition of the girlfriend. NBC 4 LAPD motorcycle officer collides with SUV in downtown Los Angeles A motorcycle officer with the Los Angeles Police Department was involved in a collision with the front of an SUV in downtown Los Angeles late Monday night. The crash was reported shortly after 11 p.m. in the area of Temple and Los Angeles streets near the LAPD Metropolitan Detention Center. Video from the scene showed the downed motorcycle after it had struck the front passenger side of the white BMW SUV. The officer was treated at the scene by responding paramedics but was not taken to a hospital, according to news video service KNN. A woman believed to be the driver of the BMW remained at the scene following the crash. It was unclear what caused the collision or who was at fault. KTLA 5 4 people hurt in shooting in Winnetka neighborhood Gunfire erupted in a neighborhood in Winnetka on Sunday night, leaving four people shot. The shooting happened on Saticoy Street and Oso Avenue. AIR7 flew over the very active crime scene at 11 p.m., where many officers were seen investigating. All four shooting victims were rushed to the hospital, but their conditions are unknown. Investigators are now searching for the gunman. A witness described the moments when the gunfire went off. "I was just having dinner with my family. We heard the gate open, so the door was open, and out of nowhere, you hear four gunshots, just went off out of nowhere. And then instantly, you hear people scream and yell. They're asking for help, they're pleading for help," Quincy Mendoza said. ABC 7 Armed robbers shoot man, steal his jewelry in Panorama City, police say One person was hospitalized on Monday night after a shooting in Panorama City, police said. It happened at around 8:40 p.m. in the 14700 block of Arminta Street, Los Angeles Police Department officers told CBS News Los Angeles. They say that the victim, an unidentified 38-year-old man, was approached by a group of four suspects, who shot him and stole jewelry before running from the area. The victim was hospitalized in unknown condition. Police said that the suspects are all men in their 30s who were wearing black clothing. They also believe that a handgun was used in the shooting. It's unclear what type of jewelry was taken during the incident. A large area surrounding Arminta Street was blocked off as police investigated the shooting, which appeared to have happened near a warehouse. CBS 2 Teen found with loaded .357 magnum during curfew stop in Southern California A loaded .357 magnum was found on a 16-year-old who was detained for violating a curfew ordinance over the weekend in Santa Barbara County, according to authorities. The incident occurred just after midnight on Saturday when deputies contacted a group of five minors and one adult at the beach access point near the 6500 block of Del Playa Drive in Isla Vista, the sheriff’s office said. During the investigation, deputies found multiple fixed-blade knives inside a backpack after one of the teens consented to a search. “Deputies then conducted a probable cause search of the juvenile and located a loaded .357 magnum revolver in his pants pocket,” the sheriff’s office said. The gun was later confirmed to have been stolen from Arizona. The unidentified teen was arrested and booked into Juvenile Hall, according to the sheriff’s office. The rest of the minors were cited for violating curfew and released to their parents. KTLA 5 Arizona man arrested in Southern California human trafficking investigation Riverside police arrested a registered sex offender from Arizona for allegedly trafficking a minor for prostitution in Southern California. The Riverside Police Department arrested Deirdrick Dayvon Bradford, 31, for human trafficking of a minor, possession of child pornography and pimping. Detectives began their investigation into Bradford in mid-August after receiving a tip about online advertisements promoting a female juvenile for commercial sex. Investigators determined the girl was a victim of human trafficking, who had been engaging in prostitution in Riverside County, Los Angeles and Arizona. Months later, Riverside police secured an arrest warrant for Bradford and teamed up with the U.S. Marshals to locate him. Law enforcement in Phoenix arrested him on Oct. 14 and extradited him to Riverside County 10 days later. Bradford is being held on an $85,000 bail. "This investigation highlights the outstanding work of our Vice Unit and their relentless efforts to protect victims of human trafficking," said Riverside Police Chief Larry Gonzalez. "With the support of our METRO Team and the U.S. Marshals Task Force, we were able to locate and arrest a dangerous offender who tried to evade justice. CBS 2 BWC: Suspect charges at Oregon officers with knife, injuring one before fatal OIS Body camera footage shows an officer-involved shooting of a man who took a knife from a backpack and charged at an officer, the Rogue Valley Times reported. The Oct. 15 confrontation occurred following a 911 call from a woman who said that the suspect had refused to leave her apartment, according to the report. Eagle Point Police Chief Jim Hamilton was the first to contact the suspect, who was sitting on a public bench. Hamilton activated his body camera and attempted to question the suspect about the reported incident. The suspect was defensive, insisting that the woman invited him to the apartment. “I’m late to the party here, right? I don’t know what’s going on, so I’ve got to find out from you,” Hamilton said. “That’s why I’m talking to you. There’s two sides to every story.” The suspect initially refused to identify himself and then provided a false name. Dispatch later confirmed he had an extraditable warrant from California for a parole violation related to sexual assault. Officer Marc Slagle arrived on the scene and, after speaking with him briefly, informed the suspect he was under arrest. At that point, the suspect retrieved a knife from one of his backpacks and charged at Slagle, prompting Hamilton to deploy his TASER, bringing the suspect to the ground momentarily. The incident occurred around 4:41 p.m. on Nov. 2. The officer, who has not been publicly identified, underwent surgery and is currently in stable condition, according to the Jacksonville Police Department. A K-9 officer was also injured during the encounter. A Blue Alert remains in effect, and Dennis is considered armed and dangerous. Dennis is now facing warrants for aggravated assault against a public servant and interference with a police service animal. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced a $10,000 reward for information leading to Dennis’ arrest and added him to the Texas Department of Public Safety’s 10 Most Wanted fugitives list, according to the report. “Attacks on our men and women in uniform must stop,” Abbott said in a statement. PoliceOne Public Safety News Intense flames force firefighters into defensive mode in Los Angeles Firefighters spent more than an hour and a half battling a stubborn blaze in downtown Los Angeles’ Fashion District early Monday morning. The fire broke out shortly after 2 a.m. inside an occupied one-story commercial building on the 700 block of Pico Boulevard. The intense flames forced arriving firefighters into a defensive mode, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Eventually, the 109 firefighters knocked down the blaze in an hour and 38 minutes. “Though intense flames caused structural compromise throughout the involved commercial structures, firefighters kept the blaze confined with no extension into neighboring businesses,” a spokesperson for the Fire Department said. Initial reports suggested that the fire may have originated in a dumpster located in an alley adjacent to the building; however, the cause still remains under investigation. KTLA 5 Public’s Help Sought Identifying Hospitalized Man, About 35 Social workers sought the public’s help Sunday identifying a patient at Los Angeles General Medical Center who was found last Monday in Lincoln Heights. The man appears to be approximately 35 years old and is possibly Hispanic, authorities said. He was found on Daly Street. He stands 5-feet-8 inches tall, weighs 117 pounds, has dark hair and brown eyes. He has tattoos on the face and both forearms. Anyone with information that could help uncover the man’s identity was urged to call social workers handling the case at 323-409-3859 or the medical center’s department of social work at 323-409-5253.
