1 out of every 8 Americans is on food assistance — but that’s just the
current snapshot of this moment. When you think about how many people have
ever been on food assistance at any point in their life, the number is far
higher.

Because life happens.

The beauty of having a safety net is that it can be there for you on your
worst day, so that you can get on your feet and pay it forward on your
best day.

There are way too many people that want to advance the idea that needing
help at any point in your life is shameful.

I don’t think we should be ashamed that we are a nation that feeds its
children.
I don’t think we should be ashamed that we are a nation that helps people
on their worst day.

Because we will all have a worst day — including the wealthy and
billionaires.

Because when they crash the economy, and their assets are leveraged out
the wazoo, who do they run to for help? They run to the government for
bailouts.

Corporations and billionaires get more in welfare than a single mom ever
will.

Just because they don’t have to pull out an EBT card in public, don’t get
it twisted: They’re getting more of a leg up than any of us.

My family relied on food assistance after my dad died.

My mom became a single mom overnight with two kids, and EBT, WIC, etc was
there for us. Frankly, if it wasn’t for that, I can only imagine the kind
of decisions we would have to make. I likely would not be where I am
today.

There are a lot of Republicans in office that have benefitted from social
safety net programs, and they don’t want you to know, because they have
internalized all of this shame.

This is the natural outcome of our systems.

If people don’t want people to be on SNAP, WIC, and EBT, they can’t also
be opposing minimum wage increases, too.

So today, we’re still supporting food banks that are supporting more than
3 million New Yorkers who are in need as their food benefits become a
political chip for Republicans.

If you can, will you split a $3 donation—$1 to each organization—between
Elmor, RAP4Bronx, and City Harvest who are increasing their capacity to
help those who are struggling to put food on the table in New York?
