John,
The United States has entered its second month of a federal government shutdown, and food assistance for 42 million people is hanging in the balance.
Why? Because Donald Trump, his administration, and Republicans in Congress are treating struggling families as political chess pieces while trying to blame Democrats for standing up against impending cuts to health care marketplace subsidies, which are going to send insurance premiums skyrocketing if not extended.
Using hunger as a political weapon is an act of violence by Donald Trump.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is the largest anti-hunger program in the country. In all previous government shutdowns, SNAP payments continued to be paid out fully through a contingency fund under the USDA. This is the first time in the program’s history that a presidential administration has claimed that it can’t be done.
The truth is, it CAN be done — they just don’t want to! Trump and his cronies were ready to completely cut off SNAP payments this month, until two federal judges stepped in and said they must at least partially fund it.
Now, in spite of those court orders, Trump is back to threatening to withhold all SNAP payments on Truth Social:
Nearly 1 in 8 families rely on SNAP to put food on the table, and 1 in 5 children in this country depend on the program to avoid going hungry. Even if the Trump administration ends up partially funding the program this month, for many, it won’t be enough.
Countless families and individuals will struggle as a result of Trump’s cruelty, and it’s once again unclear when they will receive their benefits for November (if at all). Even if partial payments are made, the USDA says “recipients in some states may not see their November benefits for weeks – or even months.”
In solidarity,
