Hi John,

Last week brought devastating news. Hurricane Melissa hit Jamaica and the Caribbean, causing mass destruction. The head of the United Nations said we’ve failed to limit global heating to 1.5°C, and that the consequences could be dire.

We are going to breach 1.5°C, but we have not breached hope. This is not a time to retreat. It’s time to act faster, fairer, and together. Now it’s time for world leaders to act like it.

The next steps are political; the most polluting countries need to step up and stop putting profits over people and the planet. That’s why ahead of the UN climate conference starting next week, I’m here to show you that when people come together and demand change, it works. We are making progress worldwide.

In Brazil, campaigns to protect the Amazon rainforest have reached a milestone.

Spanish bank Santander has caved to pressure from us, partners and you to slash financing to Eneva,1 a company court ordered to stop gas extraction on Indigenous Gavião Real land. It’s a step in the right direction and a reminder that public pressure works.

But the fight isn’t over yet. Banks like Santander must fully stop funding Amazon oil and gas and adopt clear policies to protect the rainforest from reaching its tipping point.

In Europe, climate leadership is moving forward.

EU leaders have started to listen to demands for strong EU climate targets. Over the last year, global supporters of 350 have sent thousands of emails, messages and social posts to EU leaders and the Commissioner for Climate Change.2

It’s working! Thanks to supporters, we’ve passed a major hurdle in getting an ambitious 2040 target approved: EU leaders supported the higher cuts to emissions, with some conditions. And how do we know we had a part in it? The Climate Commissioner's office sent us a response to all our messages!

This puts us in a much better space for the critical climate talks, COP30, starting in Brazil next week. But, this is the time to keep up the pressure; we’re prepping actions targeting the EU during COP30, and we’ll need your help!

And globally, a historic breakthrough for nature and climate.

At a major world conservation conference, governments passed the first-ever global decision that directly names coal, oil, and gas production as a threat to nature. It calls on governments to phase out fossil fuels, and even mentions a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.3 This is the strongest language ever adopted at a global level to confront fossil fuels – a major show of momentum heading into COP30 in Belém, Brazil.

Together, these moments show that change isn’t just possible – it’s already happening. But we can’t stop now. With COP30 starting next week, we need to keep pushing for a fast, fair, and funded transition away from fossil fuels, led by people and communities on the frontlines.

Because every win, big or small, begins with people like you taking action.

In solidarity,

Katrina for 350.org

P.S. Want to do more? Help us amplify Indigenous leaders’ call for real climate action at COP30.
