Friend,

FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez has stood up to the FCC chairman’s efforts to censor free speech and clear the path for right-wing oligarchs to expand their media empires through massive media consolidation.[1]

Brendan Carr became a household name after he bullied ABC/Disney to censor Jimmy Kimmel: “We can do this the easy way or the hard way,” he said, leading to a rare moment of bipartisan outrage at his overreach.

The chairman has been on slightly better behavior since being called to the mat, but efforts to squash independent media endure. The administration eliminated the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, resulting in many public-media stations reducing staff or shuttering altogether.[2] It has also launched investigations to undermine diverse and equitable workplaces — and threatened broadcasters with punishment for airing content critical of the administration.

Commissioner Gomez is the lone dissenting voice at the newly minted Federal Censorship Commission. She is challenging the administration’s attacks on the First Amendment, and fighting to ensure that propaganda does not replace the kind of honest journalism that holds the powerful accountable to the people.

Free Press is honored to host another stop on the commissioner’s First Amendment Tour to Challenge Government Censorship and Control. On Thurs., Nov. 13, Commissioner Gomez and other leaders will discuss threats to free speech and First Amendment rights at a time of corporate consolidation and escalating attacks on journalists.

Many of you have taken action with us to oppose the FCC chairman’s repeated weaponization of the agency to intimidate journalists, rubber-stamp media mergers and suppress dissent — and Commissioner Gomez has been fighting the same fight inside the agency.

This event — on Thurs., Nov. 13, at 6:30 p.m. ET — is a chance to hear the inside scoop about what's happening at the FCC … and what’s working to slow down or stop attacks on our freedoms. We’ll discuss what we can do next to effectively resist.

You won’t want to miss this — RSVP to our Nov. 13 livestream right away!
