MIConsumerWatch Launches Squid Game-Inspired Consumer Protection Campaign
*LANSING* – Today, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced the launch of the next themed campaign from the Department of Attorney General’s new consumer protection social media account [ [link removed] ], MI Consumer Protection (@MIConsumerWatch). Inspired by the hit Netflix series “Squid Game,” the campaign creatively explores the world of scams and deception, showing Michiganders how to protect themselves before they become players in a dangerous game.
Running until November 14, the “Squid Game” campaign will feature posts, videos, and consumer alerts that highlight how scammers manipulate, pressure, and deceive people – and how consumers can “win” by recognizing the warning signs. The campaign includes information on:
* Sweepstakes Scams – Just like the games in “Squid Game,” scammers often promise big prizes or cash rewards, but it could be a setup to steal money.
* Auto Warranty Scams – “Red light, green light” serves as a reminder to stop and think before acting on any suspicious auto warranty offer.
* Emotional “Tug of War” – Scammers play on emotions to pull consumers into a trap.
* Unemployment Scams – In times of uncertainty, like many Michiganders are experiencing, scammers target those seeking relief.
* Financial Scams – Scammers, like in “Squid Game,” wait for consumers to make one wrong move to take their personal and financial information.
“Scammers play by their own rules, and they’re always looking for new ways to pull consumers into their schemes,” Nessel said. “The MI Consumer Watch accounts use pop culture, creativity, and education to provide timely reminders that awareness is the best defense against even the worst scams.”
