Friend,
We just filed a lawsuit against Virginia election officials to stop unlawful barriers to voting that target college and university students, including those attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
College students’ voter registration applications have been rejected across Virginia for not including dormitory names or dorm room numbers.
This policy discriminates against students—only they are being required to provide this type of minutiae to vote. This has been happening even though Virginia voter registration applications don’t ask for that information and even though Virginia law doesn’t require a dormitory name or dorm room number to vote.
With college students attempting to vote across Virginia in today’s election, Advancement Project is on the front lines, working to support them and help them cast ballots that will be counted.
This is why Advancement Project is here. We will keep challenging voter suppression wherever it shows up. Can you make a gift today to help us protect student voters in Virginia and beyond?
Young people, including young voters of color, have a huge stake in the future of this country. Tens of thousands of Virginia students want to make their voices heard in today’s election, but too many are at risk of facing disenfranchisement, rejected provisional ballots, and long lines at polling places as officials attempt to resolve discrepancies at check-in.
That’s why, in addition to fighting to protect and expand the right to vote in the courts, our staff attorneys are on the ground monitoring polling places at Virginia college campuses as part of our year-round commitment to voter protection and ensuring that elections are fair and accessible.
Your generous support keeps our attorneys in court and our organizers on the ground. Every dollar helps ensure young people, especially Black and Brown students, can access the ballot and have a voice in shaping the future they deserve. Please give today and stand with us!
Finally, please encourage college students to vote where they can in elections that are happening today. In Virginia, college students who aren’t registered yet can still vote on Election Day using same-day registration.
