October Secular News Round-Up

Here’s your monthly update with the latest news from the current administration, plus how you can take action to help protect the separation of church and state.

SCOTUS Looks at Eliminating Conversion Therapy Ban:

The Supreme Court seems likely to side with an Evangelical therapist challenging Colorado’s ban on conversion therapy ([link removed]) , after hearing arguments this October. This therapy practice is often used by religious extremists in an attempt to change LGBTQ+ minors' sexual orientation or gender identity.

Conversion therapy has been widely discredited by major medical organizations and poses serious mental health risks to its patients. If the ban is overturned, therapists in 25 states could legally impose this harmful practice. The Court’s decision is expected in summer 2026.

In South Carolina, You Must Swear an Oath to God to Be an Election Worker

James Reel just wanted to help with elections, but state law in SC requires poll volunteers to make a religious oath with no secular alternative when applying for the role.

Now, Reel is working with the Freedom From Religion Foundation on a lawsuit ([link removed]) that could allow nonreligious volunteers across South Carolina to participate in this important civic duty.

In Other News:

SCA has partnered with ([link removed]) American Atheists, the American Humanist Association, and the Freedom From Religion Foundation to create a Know Your Rights guide for federal workers who encounter religious harassment at work. ([link removed])

Brandi Carlile performed her new song “Church and State” on Saturday Night Live ([link removed]) this weekend. The anthem is a moving political commentary that emphasizes the importance of church-state separation.

The songs lyrics quote Thomas Jefferson’s own words, that "legislature should make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. Thus, building a wall of separation between Church and State."
