Friend, earlier this month, I visited the Weld County Food Bank.
What I saw in Greeley, on my Fight for Colorado tour, reminded me exactly why I’m in this fight. Read on to learn what we’ve been up to, and jump to the end for ways to take action with us on hunger in our state.
Fighting for SNAP and food security
No one in Colorado should have to choose between food, housing, or medicine. That’s why I’ve taken the Secretary of Agriculture to court.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) initially refused to tap into an emergency reserve of funds specifically designated for Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients. Their goal was to cut off SNAP benefits on November 1st. Their actions have put 42 million people — including more than 600,000 Coloradans — at risk of a broader hunger crisis. And our farmers, ranchers, producers, and every person who plays a role in our food systems will be harmed by this wrongful action.
We are holding the Agriculture Secretary and the Trump administration accountable for their illegal and harmful actions – and have secured relief that will limit the damage. The administration will be required to tap into a reserve fund it initially refused to use, but those funds only provide partial relief, and the administration is opting not to use other funds that could provide critical food assistance and are leaving people vulnerable.
This is actually the second time I have taken the USDA to court for unlawful actions that hurt families who depend on SNAP’s nutrition assistance. My promise to you is this: Every time they try to break the law, I will be there to hold them accountable.
One action we can all take today to fight hunger
In Greeley, I met with Bob O’Connor and his incredible Weld County Food Bank team, who work every day to make sure families don’t go hungry. They’ve expanded their hours into the evenings so that working parents can get food after long shifts.
If you share my belief that no Coloradan should ever go hungry, I’m asking for your help today.
