Dear friend,

On Election Day, we cast our votes to advance the people, ideas, and policies that we believe will better our society. In this time of great uncertainty, it is crucial that we participate in the democratic process. The right to vote, a key component of our democracy, remains fragile. We must stay engaged and remember voting is not only our responsibility, but our privilege.

In the United States, the fight for equal access to the ballot box has been long and arduous. The Voting Rights Act, signed into law by President Johnson in 1965, outlawed many discriminatory voting practices adopted after the Civil War. Section 2 of this legislation affirms for us that no voting qualification shall be imposed by any State or political subdivision to deny the right of any citizen of the United States to vote on account of race or color. This section of the landmark legislation remains under threat.

Last month, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Louisiana v. Callais. This case challenges the constitutionality of the creation of a congressional district in Louisiana, to comply with section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, designed to ensure equal representation. The question being asked is whether the creation of this district violates the 14th and 15th Amendments of the Constitution.

This is the most monumental case relating to the Voting Rights Act in a decade, and the repercussions of this ruling have the potential to silence minority voters all over our country. The impact of this decision would reach far beyond Louisiana. The case is yet another critical reminder of why voting, engaging and staying informed and involved are so important.

As your Member of Congress, I have and always will protect the right to vote. This Congress, I voted against the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would impede the ability of American citizens, including veterans, married women, and those without passports, to exercise their right to vote in federal elections. I will continue to vote against any legislation that attempts to block equitable access to the ballot. You can read my full statement on the SAVE act here.

Additionally, I am a co-sponsor of H.R.14. the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2025, which would restore and modernize the protections of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. John R. Lewis was a fierce leader for civil rights. He often spoke about the importance of the right to vote. He once said, “My dear friends: Your vote is precious, almost sacred. It is the most powerful nonviolent tool we have to create a more perfect union.” I believe this sentiment rings loud and true today. I hope his words compel you to fulfill your civic duty today at the ballot box.

Today, polls in Connecticut are open from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Same Day Registration (SDR) is available. You can confirm your voter registration status and polling location here. For more information regarding voting and Election Day Registration, please review the Secretary of the State’s official website here

It is a privilege to serve as your Member of Congress.
