During these record-breaking hot summer days, all I can think about is cold water: jumping into a swimming pool, watering my thirsty plants, and taking a long drink of ice cold water. Part of our mission at the League of Conservation Voters is to build a world where everyone has access to clean water: to drink, to clean with, to play in, to enjoy. We are fighting to advance protections for clean water for all people ? especially low-wealth communities and communities of color who have been consistently denied this precious resource.
One of our most important campaigns is to regulate and clean up toxic chemicals from our drinking water. For centuries, industries have dumped harmful chemicals into our drinking water and left communities from West Virginia to Michigan to the Navajo Nation to deal with the consequences. Join with us in the fight to protect clean water with the LCV Shop ? [link removed]
Last year, Aliyah Rich, a member of LCV's communication team, shared her experience growing up in New Jersey and the lead-contaminated water crisis in Newark. She wrote:
? "The environmental problems in cities with large populations of Black or Brown people are too often overlooked and ignored. Currently in New Jersey there are over 100 water systems that have possible lead contamination. The municipalities affected the most are ones made up of people of color. Systemic racism has left a legacy of stark power imbalances that continue today ? communities of color often receive fewer resources and attention, leaving basic rights like access to clean water and sound infrastructure unmet."
For those of us who did not see it before, the COVID-19 pandemic has laid bare the systemic racism and environmental injustices that Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color face. Our Protect Clean Water collection helps you spread an important message and live your values.
As Aliyah wrote, "Clean water is NOT a privilege, it is a right." Will you join with us to advance clean water as a basic human right? Check out the Protect Clean Water collection today ? [link removed]
