Dear John,

Prosperity is built on productivity, not handouts.” – Lee Kwan Yew

After a long winter, spring has finally arrived and with it a sense that brighter and more prosperous days are ahead of us.

I know that New Zealand’s economic recovery has been uneven, with Auckland carrying more than its fair share of the burden. However, there are clear signs that the economy is improving.

The Official Cash Rate and interest rates continue to fall, and business confidence has started to rise. For the first time in a while, Auckland is starting to feel the positive effects of economic revival seen in other parts of the country.

This momentum is being backed by real investment. Over $6 billion of infrastructure projects are now underway or coming online within the next few months . These include the Auckland Ports expansion, a $600 million housing project in Milldale, and major upgrades at Middlemore and Auckland City Hospitals.

Even the ASB Tennis Centre is getting an upgrade, a welcome boost for one of the city’s iconic sporting venues.

Closer to home, we’re seeing encouraging signs across the North Shore with a recovery in the housing market. Across New Zealand, we have seen five consecutive months of increased electronic card spend as interest rates reduce and there is more disposable income.

This is hopefully encouraging news for our retail stores in Birkenhead, Northcote, Beach Haven and Glenfield. After a tough couple of years, we are starting to see a revival in consumer spending.

Of course, there’s still plenty that must be done before Auckland fully feels the benefits of recovery. But as we look ahead to 2026, the outlook is looking more positive with lower inflation, economic growth and renewed consumer and business confidence.

I thank you for your continued support, feedback and encouragement on this journey to ensure a great economic future for our community and country.

Have a great November and see you soon!
