- Who: TPS is a critical humanitarian tool that protects foreign nationals residing in the United States from deportation when conditions in their home countries make it unsafe to return.
- What: TPS allows people to live and work legally in the U.S., but it does not offer a pathway to permanent residency or citizenship.
- Why: TPS holders are essential members of U.S. communities—working in key industries, supporting local economies and strengthening the towns and cities they now call home. The remittances they send back to their countries of origin also provide critical support to their families and communities facing crisis.
- Where: As of October 2025, ten countries currently have TPS designations: Myanmar (Burma), El Salvador, Ethiopia, Lebanon, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Ukraine, Yemen and Haiti. The Trump Administration has taken steps to terminate TPS designations for Afghanistan, Cameroon, Nepal, Venezuela, Honduras, Nicaragua and Syria—although litigation has in some cases delayed these terminations.
