It’s been over a month since the government shut down, and the end of it feels way too far away.

When I’ve talked to both Democratic and Republican members of Congress, most of them want to do two things—reopen the government and extend the premium tax credits.

Two days ago, on November 1, millions of Americans got notice that their health care premiums are about to skyrocket, in some cases up to 300%. That will be devastating for people who are already facing high prices across the board.

Meanwhile the government remains closed, leaving millions of federal employees without paychecks and people who rely on federal programs with uncertainty.

Now more than ever, we need people of goodwill on both sides of the aisle to come together to solve this problem. I know we can do it, but we have to trust each other and find common ground for the people.

Our nation’s history is full of leaders who faced difficulties, some much deeper than what we’re facing today. But they always stepped up to the plate. Now, in one of those challenging moments, we too must rise to the occasion.
