The New York Times had to sue the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to get them to release federal data on how Americans of color have been impacted by the pandemic.

When they did, here’s what the Times found: “Black and Latino people have been disproportionately affected by the coronavirus in a widespread manner that spans the country, throughout hundreds of counties in urban, suburban and rural areas, and across all age groups.”

We’ve learned that Black and Latinx Americans are about three times as likely to be infected as white Americans -- and that health outcomes are far worse for Americans of color.

We also learned the CDC’s data has glaring omissions -- with more than half of recorded cases missing racial data. But we’ve seen enough to know this: the government is failing communities of color, and we need to act.
