John: Amidst all of the shutdown news, business continues as usual at the Trump administration.
On Friday, we learned that Trump’s Education Department put together a 10 point “compact” that he wants colleges to sign to get “priority federal funding.” Essentially, it is rewarding the colleges and universities who agree with him and punishing those who don’t.
This type of ideological bullying undermines the foundation of academic freedom and independent educational institutions. Once we start dictating how people think and learn, we have abandoned the principles the founders earned for us. If we allow this to happen we will no longer lead the world in post-secondary education.
If you agree, will you add your name to stand for academic freedom? We are only as strong as our teachers, and if we’re actively infringing on their ability to teach and the students’ ability learn, we’re not setting them up for success.
ADD YOUR NAME
The points of this compact are ridiculous, and mostly back up Trump’s sexist and racist rhetoric. It asks schools to cap the number of international students, ban the use of sex and gender in admissions processes, and abandon the principles of free speech by committing to “transforming or abolishing” units that push back on conservative ideas.
This is not a doctrine for educational excellence – it’s an opportunity for Trump’s government to force their rhetoric on faculty, staff, and students across the United States.
Will you add your name right now to stand for academic freedom, and tell the Trump administration to stop holding education funding hostage for the sake of forcing his ideology on institutions of higher education →
Thank you,
Team Swartz
