Each November, Family Caregiver Month is celebrated across the nation to recognize the valuable contributions caregivers make in caring for loved ones with medical conditions, disabilities, or other special needs. Washington State honors these family and kinship caregivers who give of themselves while helping those they love. In Washington there are over 1.3 million adult caregivers including those who provide paid and unpaid care. Family caregivers often help with at least one household task such as shopping, managing finances, preparing meals and transportation and three-quarters of them also assist with at least one activity of daily living, essential for maintaining personal independence such as dressing, bathing, getting in and out of bed or chairs and assisting with medications.

Caring for a family member is rewarding yet can also take a toll. As the state's older population continues to increase, caregivers face workforce challenges, and a population shift that decreases the number of family members and others available to care for those who need it. Many caregivers are not aware help is available, how to find it and why it’s so important to practice self-care. Getting information, support and services is the best way to ensure caregivers can be there for family and friends while prioritizing their own health.

The Family Caregiver Support Program helps support unpaid caregivers of adults 18 or older to find local resources, such as support groups and counseling, training on specific topics, and respite care. As a service offered through the Area Agencies on Aging, find local programs by visiting Washington Community Living Connections [ [link removed] ] or call 1-855-567-0252.

Parent to Parent through the Arc of Washington provides resources for parents of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities with coordinators available in local communities. Visit Washington State Parent to Parent Network – The Arc Washington [ [link removed] ].

Washington’s Family Caregiver Learning Portal is free to all unpaid family caregivers in Washington state who help a family member or friend. Visit wacaregivingjourney.com [ [link removed] ] to learn skills to improve confidence, reduce stress, and connect with other caregivers.

AARP just released its 2025 Caregiving in the U.S. report. It includes detailed information about caregivers in a number of states, including Washington. You can find our state's report at Caregiving in the U.S. 2025: Washington [ [link removed] ]
