Trump-appointed Justice Brett Kavanaugh just handed down another devastating blow to voting rights — this time by questioning whether it’s still necessary to protect voters of color from discrimination at the ballot box.
This isn’t just another conservative opinion. It’s a warning signal that this Trump-packed Court is preparing to finish what it started over a decade ago: systematically dismantling the Voting Rights Act piece by piece.
Instead of upholding the landmark civil rights law that’s safeguarded fair elections for over 60 years, Kavanaugh is laying the groundwork to eliminate what’s left of it — inventing a baseless argument that considering the reality of racial injustice to protect against discrimination is only OK for a “limited time.”
There’s no such time limit in the Constitution, and Congress never wrote one into the law. It’s judicial activism, plain and simple — designed to weaken the Voting Rights Act and roll back protections against racial discrimination in our elections.
Equal protection under the law doesn’t have an expiration date. These are fundamental rights woven into the fabric of our democracy — not privileges subject to the political whims of the far-right.
Make no mistake: Trump and his MAGA allies want to rewrite our democracy from the bench, dismantling decades of progress and silencing voters who threaten their grip on power.
We won’t let them get away with it.
