![]() I just witnessed something that I cannot believe. A sitting President of the United States, without any sense of decency or design or decorum or history, tore down the East Wing. It makes no sense that I am saying those words, but that’s what happened. Isn’t that a metaphor for what this President promised us? Remember, in his first inaugural address, he said “this American carnage.” And sadly, he has proved true; I knew at the time that would be his carnage. Millions of Americans are on the brink of hunger and federal workers and military members are without pay — yet the President’s focus? Destruction and tearing down our history. We are better than this. Because this country — our country — was built on something stronger than fear or vengeance. It was built on a belief that our democracy belongs to all of us. That’s why I’m fighting every day in Congress to protect our democracy, stand up for working people, defend our institutions, and hold this President accountable for his abuses of power.
